Declyn, also known as “Dex,” was born on November 19, 1997, just days before the sixth wedding anniversary of Cyndi Lauper and her husband, David Thornton. While Lauper has shared parts of her career publicly for decades, she has been intentional about limiting exposure of her family.
In 2013, both Declyn and Thornton briefly appeared alongside her in the reality series “Cyndi Lauper: Still So Unusual,” which followed her life as both an artist and a mother. However, Lauper later drew a clear line between her public work and private life.

Declyn’s recent court appearance is part of a series of legal issues that have surfaced over the past several years. In July 2022, he was arrested in New York City after police allegedly found him inside a stolen vehicle. He later pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of a vehicle and was ordered to complete five days of private community service, along with staying out of trouble for one year.
In February 2024, he was again taken into custody, this time in connection with a weapons charge following a shooting incident involving a 24-year-old man named Omar Lewin. While Declyn was not accused of firing the weapon, authorities alleged he possessed a loaded firearm with intent to use it unlawfully, according to reporting from the New York Daily News.
His 2026 guilty plea marks the latest chapter in these legal proceedings, with conditions that could lead to a reduced charge if successfully completed. If he fulfills the requirements of his probation, he may later plead to a lesser offense and receive a conditional discharge.
