Tyler Robinson appears cold and silent as he faces charges in Charlie Kirk killing

The man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk made his first court appearance Tuesday, looking disheveled, expressionless, and stone-faced as prosecutors formally charged him with capital murder.

Tyler Robinson, 22, appeared virtually from jail, dressed in a suicide-prevention smock and sitting in a stark room as Judge Tony Graf read the seven felony charges against him, including aggravated murder, discharge of a firearm, and two counts of obstruction of justice, among other crimes.

He nodded occasionally as the judge spoke and only spoke once, when asked to state his name for the record. He otherwise remained stone-faced and silent, showing no emotion even as prosecutors announced they would seek the death penalty.

Robinson’s next hearing is set for September 29, with the judge ordering he remain in custody without bail. Judge Graf also granted a pretrial protective order requested by prosecutors for Kirk’s wife, Erika Kirk.

The Evidence Against Him

Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray outlined the extensive evidence gathered in the days since the September 10 attack. Investigators say Robinson’s DNA was found on the trigger of the rifle recovered near Utah Valley University, where Kirk was shot in the neck during a campus Q&A.

In a series of alleged text messages, Robinson admitted to plotting the murder for “a bit over a week.” One message to his roommate read: “Drop what you’re doing. Look under my keyboard.” Hidden there, prosecutors say, was a chilling note: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it.”

His roommate, who was also his romantic partner, responded in disbelief: “You weren’t the one who did it right????” Robinson allegedly replied: “I am, I’m sorry.”

A Nation Watches

Kirk’s murder, carried out in front of stunned students, has shaken the country. The 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, husband, and father of two was struck by a single sniper’s bullet as he debated students about mass shootings.

Hundreds fled the scene in terror as Kirk was rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he died hours later.

His widow Erika has vowed to continue his work, telling their young daughter that “Daddy is on a work trip with Jesus.”

Seeking the Ultimate Penalty

Prosecutors confirmed Tuesday they are pursuing the death penalty, which in Utah could mean execution by firing squad. Robinson remains held in jail after being turned over to Washington County Sheriff’s officials by his parents 33 hours after the shooting.

For many, the image of Robinson’s cold, stone-faced demeanor in court was as chilling as the crime itself — a first public glimpse of the man accused of pulling the trigger on one of America’s most polarizing political figures.
