What began as one of the happiest days of a young couple’s life ended in unimaginable tragedy after an Arkansas police officer lost his life while rescuing his newly engaged fiancée during a canoe trip.
Fred Marsh, a 24-year-old officer with the Rogers Police Department, drowned after entering the water to save his fiancée only hours after asking her to marry him.
According to ABC affiliate KHBS, Marsh had proposed to Hailey Lummus earlier that day before the couple joined friends for a trip on the Elk River near Noel, Missouri, close to the Arkansas state line.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that the incident occurred on Saturday, July 18. Marsh was later pronounced dead at 10:08 a.m. the following morning.
Rescue attempt turned tragic
Family members told KHBS that the group had been canoeing when Lummus encountered trouble in the water while attempting to return to a kayak.
One of Marsh’s fellow officers and the officer’s wife immediately went to assist her. When Marsh realized his fiancée was struggling, he also entered the water to help.
Lummus was successfully pushed toward a nearby canoe, but Marsh became caught in the river’s current during the rescue. Despite desperate efforts by those with him and others nearby, he disappeared beneath the water and did not resurface.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol stated that Marsh died after attempting to assist another person in the river.
Remembered as a hero
The Rogers Police Department confirmed Marsh’s death on Sunday.
Police Chief Jonathan Best praised the young officer’s commitment to serving others and remembered the enthusiasm he brought to the department during his first year on the force.
Lummus’ mother, Sheryl Padgett, said her daughter and Marsh had shared a loving relationship for three years before becoming engaged.
Although they had not yet married, she said he had become part of the family.
“They had been together for three beautiful years, and they had a very beautiful, loving relationship,” Padgett told KHBS.
She also revealed that Marsh had become like a son to her after she lost her only son in an earlier accident.
“We instantly made a connection and a bond,” she said. “I called him son, and he called me mama.”
Community pays tribute
On July 20, the Rogers Police Department escorted Marsh’s body through Northwest Arkansas in a motorcade attended by family members, fellow officers and community supporters.
His cousin, Chris Frye, described Marsh as a hero, telling NBC affiliate KNWA that he gave his life trying to save someone else and was thinking about others rather than himself.
Corporal Don Lisi of the Rogers Police Department also reflected on the loss, saying the news took time to fully sink in and remembering Marsh as someone who made a positive impact during his service.
A GoFundMe campaign organized by Lummus’ sister, Kourtlin Ricketts, has been created to assist with expenses following the tragedy.
In the fundraiser, Marsh was remembered as an “upstanding young man” whose roles as a son, fiancé, police officer, brother and friend left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
Only hours after celebrating an engagement that marked the beginning of a new chapter, Fred Marsh lost his life while saving the woman he had just asked to spend forever with, leaving behind a story of courage that has deeply moved his family, fellow officers and community.
