Luka Dončić recently a $165 million extension to stay with the Lakers.
It was a move that cements the franchise’s future. But as fans and teammates gathered to celebrate at the official press conference, one person was noticeably absent: LeBron James.
No LeBron at the presser—but no cold shoulder either
Speculation quickly spread across social media. Was LeBron snubbing the moment? Was this about the passing of the torch? Was tension brewing in L.A.?
Turns out, not even close.
According to ESPN and NBA insider Marc Stein, LeBron FaceTimed Luka that same morning to personally congratulate him on the new deal. A private gesture, but a powerful one.
“LeBron and Bronny weren’t at the press conference, but I’m told he FaceTimed Dončić to congratulate him,” Stein reported.
A historic duo gearing up for redemption
This isn’t just a symbolic gesture. The two superstars are locked in for at least one more run together and they’re hungry.
LeBron opted into his $52.6 million player option, making him the first player in NBA history to enter a 23rd season. Meanwhile, Luka is coming off a strong year, averaging 28.2 PPG, 8.1 RPG, and 7.5 APG in 70 games.
Together, the Lakers went 16–7 when both shared the floor. But despite a 50–32 regular season record, the team was bounced in the first round by the Timberwolves—a loss that still stings.
Passing the torch… or rewriting history?
It’s easy to frame this as Luka’s team now. And maybe it is. But if LeBron’s private call tells us anything, it’s that he’s still invested. He’s still chasing that elusive fifth ring.
Luka, who reached the NBA Finals in 2024 with the Mavericks, now wants his first ring. LeBron wants one more. And the Lakers want banner #18.
If they can sync, the duo might just deliver one of the most compelling seasons in franchise history.
