Stephen A. Smith and LeBron James have never had a strong relationship, and their tension recently boiled over during a heated exchange at a Lakers game.
While James was upset over Smith’s comments about his son, Bronny, their issues go beyond that. A key source of conflict has been Smith’s unwavering belief that Michael Jordan is the greatest of all time—a stance that has long put him at odds with the Lakers star.
Smith Admits There’s No Fixing Their Relationship
On a recent episode of First Take, Stephen A. Smith admitted that his relationship with LeBron James has always been strained, and he has no plans to fix it anytime soon.
“We may never speak in life again. I’m fine with that,” he stated. “We damn sure don’t have to say hello to each other.”
“We don’t see eye to eye and there are several reasons for that—I’ve hinted at some—but we both know the main one.”
Smith also pushed back against claims that he disrespected Bronny James, emphasizing that his comments were directed at one person only.
“You see, I don’t run and hide. If I’m wrong, I’ll say I’m wrong. If I’m right, I’m right. I was never shitting on Bronny James. I was talking about one person and one person only.”
Despite any personal tension, Smith insists he is simply doing his job.
“I get paid to talk about folks, not to them. I cover the league. You play, I watch, dissect, analyze, and broadcast.”
Michael Jordan: The Core of the Conflict?
A major factor in the rocky dynamic between Smith and James is the never-ending GOAT debate. Smith remains firm in his belief that Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time—a stance that has only added to the friction.
“My GOAT is Michael Jordan,” he stated bluntly. “I watch the game. I’m a student of the game. I know a GOAT when I see one.”
While James has rewritten the record books, including surpassing 40,000 career points and earning another All-Star appearance, Smith refuses to change his stance.
“40,000 points, another All-Star appearance, another 50-point game. Whatever. Ain’t my GOAT.”
LeBron and the GOAT Debate’s Role in the Feud
While some may view Smith’s preference as personal opinion, the GOAT debate has been a long-standing source of disagreement among analysts, fans, and players alike.
LeBron, who has spent nearly two decades chasing Jordan’s legacy, has often downplayed comparisons while also acknowledging his desire to be recognized as the greatest. However, despite his record-breaking achievements, James continues to face resistance from traditionalists who remain loyal to Jordan.
Smith’s unwavering support for the Bulls legend seems to be a key reason why James has always kept his distance from the outspoken ESPN analyst.
