As Secretary of State Marco Rubio continues to represent the United States on the global stage, growing attention is also being directed toward the woman who has stood beside him for decades — his wife, Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio.
This week, Jeanette accompanied Rubio during his visit to the Vatican, where he held a lengthy private meeting with Pope Leo. The discussion reportedly focused on international humanitarian concerns, religious freedom, and aid efforts involving Cuba, while tensions between the White House and the Holy See over the Iran conflict continue to draw international scrutiny.
Jeanette Rubio’s presence during another major diplomatic moment once again highlighted the steady but often understated role she has played throughout her husband’s political career.
A relationship built long before Washington
Jeanette Christina Dousdebes Rubio was born in Miami, Florida, on December 5, 1973, to Colombian immigrant parents. According to details included in the report, her parents separated when she was still a child, something that later influenced her views on family and stability.
Before entering public life, she attended Miami Dade College and worked as a bank teller. Her relationship with Marco Rubio began years earlier, after the two met in 1990 at the West Miami Recreation Center. At the time, Jeanette was still in high school while Rubio was already attending college.
Their relationship continued for several years before Rubio proposed at the Empire State Building, reportedly inspired by Jeanette’s admiration for the film Sleepless in Seattle. The couple married in 1998 during a Catholic ceremony in Coral Gables, Florida.
Today, they are parents to four children: Amanda, Daniella, Anthony, and Dominick.
From NFL cheerleader to community advocate
Before becoming known as the wife of one of America’s highest-profile political figures, Jeanette spent a season as a member of the Miami Dolphins cheerleading squad.
She joined the organization in 1997 alongside her sister Adriana after being encouraged to audition. During that period, she also appeared in the team’s first swimsuit calendar.
However, Jeanette later acknowledged that the environment was never entirely comfortable for her personality. In comments previously shared with Politico, she described herself as naturally shy and admitted the highly social atmosphere and demanding routines were difficult for her.
She left the squad in 1998, the same year she married Rubio, and later attended the International Fine Arts College. Speaking to Politico in 2012, she explained that her studies paused after she became pregnant with the couple’s first child.
A quieter role outside the spotlight
Although she has largely remained away from constant political attention, Jeanette Rubio has built a significant presence through philanthropic and advocacy work across South Florida.
She currently leads JDR Consulting, Inc., an organization connected to charitable initiatives, including work involving the Braman Family Charitable Foundation.
Much of her public service has centered on protecting vulnerable children and combating human trafficking.
Since 2020, she has served on Florida’s Statewide Council on Human Trafficking after being appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis. She was later reappointed in 2022.
Her involvement has also included work with Kristi House, a Miami-based organization supporting children impacted by abuse and exploitation, including victims of sex trafficking.
Despite her growing visibility, Jeanette has repeatedly described herself as someone who prefers privacy over political attention. Still, as Rubio’s international responsibilities continue expanding, she has increasingly appeared beside him during some of the administration’s most closely watched diplomatic moments.
