The real reason NBC meteorologist Dylan Dreyer’s marriage with colleague Brian Fichera ended in divorce

and I where — whatever reasons, whatever broke in a marriage — you could either fix it if you can and ideally you would and you try, and you try to fix things,” she said.

“Or you accept that it’s broken and you take this new step forward.”

For Dreyer and Fichera, that next step meant changing their relationship rather than continuing as a married couple.

She explained that there was something they “couldn’t fix,” but said approaching each other as friends had helped her release some past grievances.

Her account focused on acceptance: acknowledging the limits of what they could repair while preserving their ability to support each other.

Keeping their children at the center

Although their marriage ended, Dreyer said she wanted their sons to continue feeling loved and supported by both parents.

That commitment extended to their everyday routines. At the time of the interview, she revealed that she and Fichera still gathered for dinner with their children almost every night.

They also planned to spend Thanksgiving together.

Those arrangements reflected the approach Dreyer outlined when announcing the separation: maintaining a friendship and working together as parents.

Rather than describing the split as the end of their family connection, she spoke about finding a different way to move forward.

The regular meals offered a practical example of how they were maintaining time together with their children while adjusting to their changed relationship.

A marriage that included meaningful support

Their separation followed years in which Dreyer had publicly shared examples of Fichera’s support during difficult family experiences.

In 2019, she discussed suffering a miscarriage after the birth of their first son, Calvin. She recalled Fichera reassuring her that she had done nothing wrong and helping her work through feelings of blame.

They faced another challenging period in September 2021, when their third son, Russell, arrived six weeks early and spent a week in a neonatal intensive care unit.

His birth coincided with promotional commitments for Dreyer’s children’s book, Misty the Cloud: A Very Stormy Day. Dreyer subsequently described feeling guilty about working during that time.

Fichera reassured her that her dedication to work was also teaching their sons an important lesson.

Those memories help explain why the couple’s separation surprised viewers who had followed their family over the years. They also sit alongside Dreyer’s more recent explanation that a relationship can contain meaningful support and still reach a point where its problems cannot be resolved.

For Dreyer, the decision was to accept that reality and build a friendship that allowed them to remain present for their children.
