Jill Rhodes married Sean Hannity despite early red flags — and a blunt warning from their pastor

Before Sean Hannity and Jill Rhodes married in 1993, people around her had already expressed reservations about their relationship. Even their pastor reportedly questioned whether she should go through with the wedding.

Rhodes chose to follow her own judgment. The couple went on to share a marriage spanning more than two decades and welcomed two children before eventually separating.

But Hannity’s own recollections reveal an occasionally uncomfortable beginning, from his attraction to her newspaper photograph to a disagreement during a meeting with their pastor.

Those moments did not determine how their marriage would end, but they help explain why some people urged Rhodes to think twice.

His interest began with her newspaper photograph

Hannity first noticed Rhodes while reading a local newspaper in Huntsville, Alabama, where she worked as a political columnist.

Speaking to Newsmax in 2011, he acknowledged her professional abilities while admitting that her appearance initially caught his attention.

“She was really talented — gifted, but I really just fell in love with the little picture in her column,” he recalled.

The admission suggested that his first interest was driven more by a photograph than by familiarity with her work or personality.

Their paths crossed at a mayoral debate in 1992. According to People’s 2002 account, Rhodes felt an immediate connection and believed she would eventually marry him.

Their relationship soon reached a significant crossroads. Just months into their romance, Hannity accepted a job in Atlanta, and Rhodes agreed to move with him on the condition that they become engaged.

She was prepared to make a major change in her own life, but wanted a commitment before taking that step.

Colleagues and their pastor voiced concerns

The more pointed warnings came from people who questioned whether Hannity would be a suitable husband.

In the same Newsmax interview, Hannity said Rhodes’ colleagues discouraged her from marrying him after hearing his radio program.

Their concerns were followed by an awkward encounter with the couple’s pastor. Hannity recalled arguing about his belief that the church had become too liberal, turning a discussion connected to their marriage into a political disagreement.

“[The pastor] said, ‘You’re crazy to be marrying this guy,’ because I started arguing about how the church has become too liberal. And I think she left that meeting in tears,” Hannity said.

The account offered a less flattering glimpse of his outspoken personality, particularly in a setting where the couple were discussing their future together.

For Rhodes, the warnings were explicit. Nevertheless, she married Hannity in 1993, and they built a family together.

Their marriage ended privately years before the announcement

Hannity and Rhodes publicly confirmed their separation in 2020, although their relationship had ended well before the announcement.

According to Page Six, sources said their divorce was finalized in 2019 following a lengthy private separation.

In a joint statement published by People, they emphasized their continuing commitment to their children.

“Amicable agreements were entered into over four years ago between Sean and Jill. They maintain a close relationship as parents to their children,” the statement said.

Sources speaking to the Daily Mail attributed difficulties in the marriage to Hannity’s demanding work schedule. They also described the former couple as such effective co-parents that people around them struggled to recognize they had separated.

Later reporting linked Hannity romantically with Ainsley Earhardt, with a source telling Page Six that their relationship began after their respective marriages ended.

The early concerns remain part of Hannity and Rhodes’ history, but the available accounts do not establish that those incidents caused their divorce.
