Senator Mitch McConnell has released a new photograph with his wife, former Cabinet Secretary Elaine Chao, as he continues recovering from the injuries he suffered in a fall at his home in June.
The 84-year-old Republican remains away from the Senate while undergoing intensive rehabilitation, with his office saying he is making progress but has not yet been medically cleared to return to work.
The image, dated Sunday, July 26, shows McConnell smiling alongside Chao and was accompanied by a statement explaining that his recovery remains the priority.
In a message released by his office, McConnell said he was disappointed that his rehabilitation would prevent him from attending this week’s Fancy Farm picnic in western Kentucky.
“I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders,” he said.
He added that he looked forward to returning to both the Senate and his home state as soon as possible.
Doctors say rehabilitation remains intensive
McConnell’s physician said the senator has continued an extensive rehabilitation programme since leaving hospital.
According to the medical update, McConnell is completing multiple physical therapy sessions each day to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls.
The Capitol’s Office of Attending Physician also said doctors continue to meet with him daily to monitor every aspect of his recovery.
Medical officials noted that McConnell’s childhood battle with polio remains a significant factor affecting his mobility.
The senator was initially hospitalised on June 14 after suffering a fall that briefly left him unconscious. During his recovery, he also experienced what he later described as a mild case of pneumonia.
His office confirmed that the rehabilitation programme means he will miss several upcoming events, including the memorial service for Senator Lindsey Graham at Washington National Cathedral as well as Kentucky’s annual Fancy Farm gathering.
Public scrutiny continues during absence
While the latest photograph was intended to provide an update on McConnell’s condition, it has not ended public discussion surrounding his health.
The senator has not spoken publicly since his hospitalisation, prompting continued questions despite several people saying they have spoken with him privately in recent weeks.
CNN commentator Scott Jennings said he spoke with McConnell by telephone and rejected rumours suggesting the senator was seriously incapacitated.
Spokespeople for Senators John Thune and John Barrasso also confirmed that both lawmakers had lengthy conversations with McConnell earlier this month.
Senator Shelley Moore Capito said someone who recently visited McConnell described him as clear-minded, although she indicated she would wait until he was ready to receive visitors before seeing him herself.
The release of earlier recovery photographs also sparked online speculation. Conservative commentator Sean Davis questioned why McConnell had not appeared in a video message, while Senator Ron Johnson later withdrew comments after initially suggesting an earlier image might have been outdated.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has also publicly called for additional information regarding McConnell’s condition.
Recovery continues as Senate awaits his return
McConnell remains in the final months of his Senate career after deciding not to seek another term.
Because the Senate does not allow proxy voting, his continued absence has temporarily reduced the Republican majority by one seat.
Although questions about his health have continued, official statements from his office and the Capitol’s medical team have consistently described his focus as recovering through daily rehabilitation before returning to public duties.
