For years, Kate Moss carefully balanced global fame with a deeply private family life. But as her daughter Lila Moss steps further into the spotlight, that once-protected world is beginning to open — on her own terms.
Born on September 29, 2002, in London, Lila is the only child of Moss and her former partner Jefferson Hack, and has steadily emerged as a rising figure in the fashion industry. Despite her parents’ split shortly after her birth, the two have continued to co-parent and maintain a friendly relationship over the years.
A Childhood Kept Close to Home
Although Moss built an international career, she remained focused on maintaining a sense of normalcy for her daughter. In interviews, she described prioritizing time at home, ensuring she was present for Lila’s daily routines whenever possible.
Speaking about motherhood, Moss told British Vogue in 2007 that having her daughter changed her perspective, saying she felt she would never have to be alone again. That sense of closeness defined Lila’s upbringing, even as she was occasionally introduced to the fashion world.
Lila’s first major public appearance came at just 13 years old, when she appeared alongside her mother on the cover of Vogue Italia in 2016. She later returned to the magazine on her own, marking an early step into a career that would soon expand significantly.
A New Generation on the Runway
Lila officially began her modeling journey in 2018 when she became the face of Marc Jacobs Beauty, working under the Kate Moss Agency. From there, her career quickly gained momentum.
She appeared in Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2020 campaign before making her runway debut for the brand later that year. Opening the Paris Fashion Week show in October 2020, she walked in multiple looks, including a structured blazer ensemble and a vibrant, embellished outfit.
Moss watched the moment unfold remotely and later told British Vogue she was “really proud,” recalling how she and friends gathered to watch the show live from home. The debut marked a turning point, establishing Lila as a model in her own right.
Since then, she has secured campaigns with major fashion houses including Fendi, Versace, and Calvin Klein. In 2023, she also drew attention at the Victoria’s Secret World Tour, appearing alongside Iris Law in coordinated looks inspired by the brand’s iconic runway style.
A Changing Perspective on Fame
While Lila’s modeling success may seem like a natural progression, Moss was initially hesitant about her daughter entering the industry. In a 2008 interview with Now Magazine, she expressed a desire for Lila to grow up away from fame, saying her priority was simply for her daughter to be happy.
Lila later confirmed this in a 2022 British Vogue interview, recalling that her mother had discouraged her from pursuing modeling. However, Moss has since embraced her daughter’s ambitions, stating she would support “anything [Lila] wants to do.”
Living Openly With Type 1 Diabetes
Beyond fashion, Lila has also used her platform to bring visibility to her personal health journey. In a 2020 interview with The Kit, she shared that she has type 1 diabetes, a condition that requires ongoing management through insulin.
She has since appeared publicly with her insulin pump and glucose monitor visible, including during the Fendi x Versace “Fendace” show at Milan Fashion Week in 2021 and at the 2022 Met Gala.
Her decision to display the devices openly has been widely recognized, with supporters praising her for helping reduce stigma and raise awareness.
