Beachgoers recall ‘ungodly screams’ as grandmother’s final moments unfold in St. Croix shark attack
A peaceful afternoon along the shoreline in St. Croix turned into a scene of panic and urgency when beachgoers reported hearing what one witness described as “ungodly screaming” coming from the water.
According to the St. Thomas Source, the cries prompted an immediate response from bystanders, including a former lifeguard and nurse who rushed toward the shoreline without hesitation. Christopher Carroll, who had been in his room overlooking Dorsche Beach, initially believed the situation was a medical emergency before realizing the severity of what was unfolding.

He told the outlet that he ran directly from his room and entered the water after being directed by others on the beach. Carroll reached Arlene Lillis, a 56-year-old visitor from Minnesota, and began pulling her toward shore.
As he approached her, Carroll realized the extent of her injuries, later explaining that her left arm had been severed below the elbow. Despite the trauma, he said she remained conscious as he worked to bring her back.
Another bystander, Nebraska tourist Ryan Connot, swam out to assist in the rescue effort. Together, the two men attempted to return Lillis to shore as quickly as possible.
During the effort, Connot recalled that she was still able to speak, identifying herself by name. He told reporters that this moment came midway through the rescue and would be the last thing she said.

Carroll also described trying to comfort her as they moved through the water, recalling her words: “I’m going to die.”
Community response and ongoing questions
Authorities later confirmed that Lillis died from her injuries. The type of shark involved has not been determined, and neither rescuer reported seeing the animal during the incident.
The Virgin Islands Consortium reported that a shark had been spotted in the same general area around the time of the attack, prompting officials to urge caution for those entering the water.

Governor Albert Bryan Jr. expressed gratitude to those who responded, acknowledging the immediate efforts of bystanders and first responders.
Those who knew Lillis described her as a proud mother and new grandmother who deeply loved the island, often spending time there during the winter months. A neighbor told ABC News that she was active, kind, and had a strong affection for both people and animals.
The tragedy has left a lasting impression on the local community and visitors alike, as questions remain about the circumstances surrounding the attack.
