Family remembers beloved 5-year-old after fatal tree accident in Kansas City

A Missouri family is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a young boy whose life was cut short after a tree fell on him while he was playing outdoors near a creek in Kansas City.

Five-year-old Vince Kellerman suffered critical injuries on May 27 while spending time near Line Creek Trail in the city’s Northland area. According to reports, the child was near the intersection of Northwest 68th Street and Northwest Waukomis Drive when a tree suddenly uprooted and came crashing down.

Emergency responders rushed Vince to Children’s Mercy Hospital, where doctors placed him on life support as his family hoped for a recovery. Despite those efforts, the young boy later died after being taken off life support on Saturday.

The tragedy came just weeks before Vince was scheduled to begin kindergarten at Hopewell Elementary in the Park Hill School District, a milestone his family had been eagerly anticipating.

A young life that touched many

Family members say Vince had recently met his future classmates and was already making plans to spend time with new friends outside of school.

In a fundraiser organized by his aunt, Sandy Nguyen, loved ones shared memories of a child whose personality left a lasting impression on everyone around him.

“He never met a stranger — only friends he had not yet gotten to know,” the family wrote.

The tribute described Vince as “smart, kind, loving, and truly magnetic,” adding that his smile and affectionate nature brought joy to those around him.

Although only five years old, family members said Vince possessed a maturity and warmth that made him unforgettable to those who knew him.

Nguyen also paid tribute to Vince’s parents, Kathy and James, saying they raised their son with unconditional love and encouraged his curiosity about the world around him.

According to the family, that love was reflected in the way Vince treated others, showing compassion and kindness throughout his short life.

Community support grows as family grieves

Vince is survived by his parents and his younger brother, Silas. Family members said the brothers enjoyed spending time outdoors together and shared a love of exploration and travel.

A GoFundMe established to help with funeral, medical, and related expenses has received an outpouring of support from the community. As of Thursday, more than $37,000 had been raised.

Nguyen thanked local residents for standing beside the Kellerman family during an unimaginably difficult time and asked for continued prayers and privacy as they mourn.

“Vince’s sudden passing has left a void that can never be filled,” she wrote.

The fundraiser concluded with a message honoring the young boy’s memory, saying that while his life lasted only five years, the impact he made on others will remain.

“Rest in peace, sweet Vince. You are deeply loved and will never be forgotten.”

As authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the accident, some local residents told FOX4 they believe recent storms and severe weather may have weakened trees in the area. However, the investigation remains ongoing.

For those who knew him, Vince is being remembered not for the tragedy that took his life, but for the joy, friendship, and kindness he shared during it.
