La Supercoppa is the 45th trophy in the history of Inter, the sixth for the current president of the Nerazzurri. Here is the Top 5 list of the most successful presidents.
The third consecutive Italian Super Cup secured in Riyadh against Napoli marks another step in Inter’s climb under Suning towards the Nerazzurri summit. The trophy added to Inter’s collection is the 45th in their 116-year history, is indeed the sixth won under the guidance of Steven Zhang. After ascending to the podium of the most successful presidents in Inter’s history last spring with the Coppa Italia triumph, Zhang now aims for the second spot held by the legendary Angelo Moratti. Here’s the Top 5 of the most successful presidents:
TOP 5 INTER PRESIDENTS BY TROPHIES
Ernesto Pellegrini
In his 11 years with Inter, Pellegrini has collected 4 major trophies including a league title. He was the architect of the German-infused Inter (featuring Rummenigge, Matthaus, Brehme, and Klinsmann) and secured the so-called “record-breaking league title” in 1989 under the guidance of Giovanni Trapattoni. Under Pellegrini, the Nerazzurri club also added two international trophies to the cabinet, winning the UEFA Cups in 1991 and 1994, breaking a continental drought of a remarkable 26 years.
Ivanoe Fraizzoli
The enamored president, who grew up admiring Meazza’s goals and became a Nerazzurri member in 1931 when Inter was still Ambrosiana. He assumed the presidency in 1968, after decades as a club official and a direct appointment by the great Angelo Moratti, staying in office for 16 years during which he secured 4 trophies, 2 league titles and 2 Italian Cups. The defeat in the Champions League final against Ajax deprived him of the most prestigious trophy, but he remains among the five most successful and beloved presidents in the club’s history.
Steven Zhang
In just over five years of presidency, he has already celebrated six titles, making him the youngest to ever lead the club (he turned 32 in December). The current President, is the architect of the new era that brought the league title back to Pinetina after an 11-year drought. Zhang, who came close to securing the first international trophy in the spring, narrowly losing in the Istanbul final against Manchester City, now has his sights set on that second star that would equal Angelo Moratti’s record of seven titles. Meanwhile, his Inter has already achieved a feat previously accomplished only by two presidents: winning at least one title for four consecutive seasons, as happened with Angelo Moratti‘s Inter (under Helenio Herrera) and Massimo Moratti‘s Inter (under Mancini and Mourinho).
Angelo Moratti
Moratti senior, the great Angelo, still holds the second position on the podium thanks to the 7 trophies collected between 1955 and 1968. He was the president who propelled Inter to the top of the world, winning two consecutive Intercontinental Cups (1964 and 1965). He was the one who first elevated the Nerazzurri club to greatness beyond national borders. He was the architect of Helenio Herrera’s dominating Inter, the team that climbed to the top of Europe by defeating the legendary Real Madrid of Puskas and Di Stefano and Benfica of Eusebio. In addition to the quartet of international titles, Angelo Moratti’s Inter also secured 3 league titles.
Massimo Moratti
At the top of the special ranking is always him, the president of the Treble, the unforgettable achievement of 2010. In the almost 20 years of the Moratti era, from 1995 to 2013, the Nerazzurri’s trophy cabinet is enriched with a remarkable 16 trophies. After the disappointments of the early years, Moratti reaps the rewards of substantial investments, inaugurating a decade of success with Roberto Mancini (initially) and Josรฉ Mourinho (later), bringing champions of the caliber of Ronaldo, Figo, Eto’o, and Ibrahimovic to San Siro. Following the historic triumph at the Bernabeu on May 22, 2010, securing the third Champions League title, he returned Inter to the top of the world exactly as his father had done over 40 years earlier.
