Milan forgets for a moment the disappointing Champions League loss and maintains the pace in the league race by beating Frosinone 3-1 at San Siro. “We wanted to return to winning immediately after that loss in the mid-week,” commented Stefano Pioli after the match, “but this is just a small step forward. It’s a great win today, but we need to maintain performance consistency, we must accelerate if we want to compete for the top positions.”
In an emergency situation, Theo Hernandez played as a central defender: “It was his idea, and he made himself available. He performed well defensively but also contributed in the attack, providing some key passes and demonstrating a strong desire to help the team in a delicate moment.”
Pioli also spoke about the ownership, including Cardinale with whom he had a long week after the defeat in the Champions League: “I hear from him often during this season; he visits Milanello, and we meet when he comes in Milan. Like any owner, he seeks explanations for certain situations, such as the mistakes we committed in the Champions League. For me, it was a constructive meeting that gives me even more motivation.”
Due to numerous absences, Pioli had to improvise and experiment with the lineup and spoke about the young players in the team: “I trust the young players a lot, and the work of the youth sector will pay off in the coming years. But this was a highly important game, coming from a tough defeat. It was a suitable match for more experienced players who could understand the importance of this game. A young player would probably have struggled with emotions; it wasn’t the right time, but I count on them.”
Milan with some big ups and downs this season, the team is desperatly seeking consistency: “It’s true, we have to find consistency. Obviously, as we recover certain players, we will have more choices and quality for the upcoming matches. In the league, we need to do better to compete for the top positions.”
