The wife of one of the richest people on earth made an unmistakable entrance at the White House state dinner honoring Chinese President Xi Jinping, selecting a vintage black gown and some of the evening’s most dramatic jewelry.
The 56-year-old Lauren Sanchez attended Thursday night’s event alongside her husband, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Her form-fitting Alexander McQueen gown featured an off-the-shoulder design and a deeply plunging neckline. Although the dress followed a classic black color palette, its fitted silhouette ensured that Sánchez Bezos did not disappear into the crowd.
The gown’s dramatic neckline also provided a prominent backdrop for an enormous diamond necklace that immediately became one of the most noticeable details of her appearance.

Sánchez Bezos paired the vintage gown with what appeared to be a tennis necklace composed of large emerald-cut diamonds.
An even larger emerald-cut pendant diamond hung from the center of the necklace, creating a striking focal point above the gown’s plunging neckline.
She also wore oversized diamond drop earrings. Despite their considerable size, the earrings appeared relatively understated beside the necklace.
Sánchez Bezos combined a revealing silhouette with an extraordinary display of diamonds, turning a familiar black dress into one of the state dinner’s most discussed ensembles.
The former journalist and helicopter pilot was photographed holding hands with her husband as they arrived at the White House.
While her clothing and jewelry attracted attention, the appearance also prompted criticism from social-media users who believed the gown was unsuitable for the occasion.
“Money does not buy one class. She dresses terribly. So inappropriate,” one user wrote on X.
Another commenter urged Sánchez Bezos to “have some dignity,” pointing to the formality of the state dinner and her age.
A third person focused on the scale of her jewelry, writing that her diamond could provide food for many hungry children.
Other prominent guests take different approaches
First Lady Melania Trump chose a more covered black-and-white outfit for the dinner.
Melania wore black Dolce & Gabbana pants with a white Saint Laurent pussy-bow blouse. Her monochrome ensemble offered a sharp contrast to Sánchez Bezos’s plunging black gown and oversized diamonds.
Ivanka Trump continued with a blue-and-white theme, wearing a strapless beaded gown by Georges Hobeika.
The three women interpreted the occasion differently, with Sánchez Bezos embracing a fitted vintage design, Melania choosing tailored separates and Ivanka selecting an embellished strapless gown.
Sánchez Bezos’s appearance nevertheless generated a significant share of the online conversation because of the dress’s neckline and the scale of her jewelry.
Previous White House outfits also attracted attention
This was not the first time Sánchez Bezos faced criticism over an outfit worn to a White House event.
In 2024, she attended a state dinner in a sheer red corset dress that placed considerable emphasis on her chest.
The following year, she selected another black gown with a silhouette and cut similar to her latest Alexander McQueen design. She paired that earlier dress with a 200-carat emerald necklace by Lorraine Schwartz.
Sánchez Bezos also created a strong reaction at President Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration. She wore a suit with a white lace bra visible underneath.
The children’s book author later said she believed she had “dressed conservatively” for the inauguration and was “super proud” of herself.
Her latest state-dinner look continued an established pattern of choosing striking, body-conscious clothing and high-value statement jewelry for major public appearances.
