Texas restaurant community shaken after family of four found dead in Houston home
A tragic discovery inside a luxury home in Houston’s River Oaks neighborhood has left both local residents and the city’s restaurant industry in mourning after authorities identified a family of four found dead earlier this week.
According to the Houston Police Department, officers were called to a residence on Kingston Street Monday evening after relatives and a babysitter became concerned when they had not heard from the family since the previous night. Police entered the home shortly after 5:25 p.m. and discovered four deceased individuals inside.

Authorities later stated that evidence at the scene indicated the incident was a murder-suicide in which the male suspect allegedly shot the three victims before taking his own life.
The victims were later identified by multiple outlets, including ABC 13 and the Daily Mail, as Matthew Mitchell, 52, his wife Thy Mitchell, 39, and their two young children, an 8-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy.
Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences records reportedly listed the children and Thy Mitchell’s deaths as homicides, while Matthew Mitchell’s death was ruled a suicide.
A respected name in Houston dining
The Mitchell family was widely known in Houston through their restaurants Traveler’s Table and Traveler’s Cart. The couple opened Traveler’s Table in 2019, building a reputation around globally inspired dishes. The restaurant later gained national attention after being featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives hosted by Guy Fieri.

Matthew Mitchell also previously served as CEO of the Texas Center for Drug Development, according to his published biography. The same biography noted that he studied in France, Italy, and at Oxford University before working in journalism in London and New York earlier in his career.
In September 2025, the couple were recognized as Restaurateurs of the Year in Houston.
Friends, colleagues, and relatives have since shared emotional tributes describing Thy Mitchell as a devoted mother, businesswoman, and friend.
Community reacts to devastating loss
The tragedy has stunned residents in River Oaks, one of Houston’s wealthiest neighborhoods. Speaking to Click2Houston, a neighbor identified as Cindy said she had lived in the area for nearly two decades and had “never seen anything like this.”
“We haven’t had these kinds of tragedies. We don’t have robberies,” she said. “I shake for the little kids.”

Thy Mitchell’s sister, Ly Mai, also confirmed the deaths in a public Facebook message, writing that the family was “grieving deeply” and requesting privacy.
Meanwhile, representatives for Traveler’s Table announced the restaurants would remain open, thanking employees for continuing to work during what they described as an immensely painful time for the entire team.
