For George Strait, family has always been the foundation of both his personal life and career. While much attention has turned to his son, George “Bubba” Strait Jr., the family’s story cannot be told without acknowledging the profound loss that shaped their lives.
Strait and his wife Norma welcomed their first child, Jenifer, in 1972, followed by Bubba in 1981. In 1986, tragedy struck when Jenifer died at just 13 years old in a car accident in San Marcos, Texas. According to United Press International, the vehicle she was in overturned while attempting a turn, and she was not wearing a seatbelt.

The loss deeply affected Strait, who later told The New Yorker in 2017 that he “just kind of shut down,” stepping away from interviews for years. Still, he continued recording and performing, while keeping his family life largely private.
In a 2012 interview with PEOPLE, he reflected that they had been “blessed” to have 13 years with their daughter. Her memory remained an enduring presence in both his life and his music.
Bubba Strait’s Path From Rodeo to Creative Partner
Born on May 14, 1981, Bubba grew up in a household where music and tradition went hand in hand. However, his early focus was not on songwriting. While attending Texas A&M University, he pursued competitive rodeo and later became a professional roper.
According to The New Yorker, his rodeo career ended after a serious injury involving his index finger. Even after stepping away from competition, the sport remained a shared passion between father and son. Strait once told The Team Roping Journal that watching Bubba compete—and even winning alongside him—was one of the greatest experiences of his life.
Bubba’s journey eventually brought him back to music, where he became an important creative force alongside his father. He co-wrote songs including “Living For the Night,” “Here For a Good Time,” and “Let It Go,” and contributed across multiple albums from 2009 through 2019.
Strait told PEOPLE that working with his son helped reignite his interest in songwriting, calling it a blessing to watch Bubba grow and succeed creatively. Their collaboration reached a public high point in 2014, when Bubba joined him onstage during the final stop of The Cowboy Rides Away Tour in Arlington, Texas, performing “Arkansas Dave,” a song Bubba wrote.
A Quiet Life, Strong Family Legacy
Away from the stage, Bubba has chosen to keep his life largely private. He married Tamara Strait in 2010 after meeting her at a San Antonio Spurs game, and the couple now shares two children, George “Harvey” Strait III and Jilliann Louise Strait.
Despite being closely tied to one of country music’s most iconic figures, Bubba has built a life centered on family while continuing to support his father’s career behind the scenes. He does not maintain a public social media presence, though his wife occasionally shares moments from their life together.
The Strait family’s legacy now spans generations. In 2019, Bubba’s son Harvey joined his grandfather on stage at the Houston Rodeo Show, highlighting how music and family remain closely intertwined.
