Just months after a life-altering injury, Lulu Gribbin is making progress her mother calls incredible as she walks, adapts, and looks ahead Lulu Gribbinto new goals.
Lulu’s injuries were caused by a shark attack while she was in the water off Florida’s Gulf Coast, an incident that would change her life in an instant and set her family on an unexpected path forward.
After spending just 77 days in rehab, Lulu was discharged in August 2024 and walked out on her prosthetic leg, a milestone that typically takes amputees a year or more to reach. Her mother, Ann Blair, says her determination made all the difference. “She is definitely a headstrong child,” she shared. “But I think that has served her well in this situation.”

The attack occurred in an area where such incidents are considered rare, leaving Lulu’s family stunned by how quickly a normal day at the beach turned into a medical emergency. In the aftermath, Lulu lost an arm and a leg, beginning a recovery journey marked by rapid progress.
Lulu’s mother, told the Daily Mail, explaining that Lulu’s femoral artery — the major blood vessel in the thigh — had been completely severed. Doctors later told the family that injuries of that nature are typically fatal within seconds due to rapid blood loss. “Medically, she shouldn’t be here,” Blair said. “But she is.”
Against all expectations, Lulu survived — a recovery many are now describing as nothing short of miraculous. She credits her life to the quick actions of three strangers who happened to be spending the day on the beach with their families when panic erupted.
One bystander, Stephen Beene, saw the shark clamped onto Lulu’s leg and rushed in, repeatedly striking the animal until it released her. Moments later, Delanie Quinnelly, a maternity nurse, took control of the scene, directing bystanders to hand over shirts and towels to create emergency tourniquets and slow the bleeding.
A Comeback No One Expected
Lulu returned home just over two months after the attack, when a parade was held in her honour, with everyone wearing purple, her favourite colour. She missed just one month of school and quickly began relearning everyday tasks, from using the bathroom to tying shoelaces, with progress her mother described as astonishing.

Her prosthetics, she says, aren’t just functional, they’re empowering. One leg can rotate to help her put on shoes, while her prosthetic arm includes a rotating wrist that can turn in a full circle. “They do stuff regular arms and legs can’t do,” Lulu explained.
Finding Joy — and Unexpected Perks
An avid athlete, Lulu even discovered that removing her prosthetic leg improved her golf swing, allowing for greater rotation and distance. And for the Taylor Swift superfan, a dream moment arrived when Andrea Swift invited Lulu and her family to the Eras Tour, where Lulu says they got to sit with Taylor’s parents and dance together.

Though she admits there are moments she wishes she could “have the best of both worlds,” Lulu focuses on gratitude. “I try to just look on the bright side,” she said, noting that while frustration happens, she doesn’t really feel any pain any more.
In the weeks that followed, Lulu’s family learned another shark attack had occurred nearby just 90 minutes before hers, a revelation that deeply unsettled them. Her mother later said that had they known about the earlier incident, they never would have entered the water, a realization that would soon fuel their push for change.
Turning Trauma Into Purpose
Lulu’s family has since launched the Lulu Strong Foundation, working to make advanced prosthetic technology more accessible and affordable. They also helped push for Lulu’s Law, a shark attack alert system in Alabama that sends mobile warnings to people nearby after the family learned more about the circumstances surrounding the attack.

While shark attacks are considered rare, Lulu’s family believed timely information could make all the difference. Under Lulu’s Law, mobile phones will alert people nearby if a shark attack is reported, giving them the chance to make informed decisions in real time.
Looking ahead, Lulu has her sights set on the Paralympics. “I don’t know exactly what event yet,” she says, “but I’m open to everything.”
Through it all, Lulu’s family says the experience has drawn them closer together, even as they’ve tried to keep life as normal as possible. They’ve said they’re loath to treat Lulu differently, noting that while she receives plenty of support, she’s still just a kid eager to keep moving forward.
What began as a devastating loss has become a story of strength, innovation, and family unity, one that Lulu is still writing, step by powerful step.
