New details have emerged about the dramatic arrest of Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk. A sheriff revealed a “shaky” phone call that tipped him off and the unusual circumstances that led to Robinson’s surrender.
Washington County Sheriff Nate Brooksby recounted at a press conference how a retired detective and family friend contacted him just 33 hours after Kirk’s killing at Utah Valley University.
“I can tell his voice is kind of shaky,” Brooksby recalled. “So my first thought is, ‘who died?’”
That’s when the retired detective, who knew Robinson’s family through a “religious association,” dropped the bombshell: “Hey, I know who the Charlie Kirk shooter is. I know the family… and we’re working on trying to get him to come in voluntarily.”

Brooksby said Robinson’s parents and the family friend persuaded him to surrender peacefully, especially as the young man battled suicidal thoughts. “Tyler’s family trusted this individual,” Brooksby explained. “They knew he was involved in law enforcement… and he could contact me directly to facilitate a calm, relaxed surrender.”
A Peaceful Surrender
Within the hour, Robinson and his parents were driven to Brooksby’s office by the family friend. There, plain-clothed detectives greeted him without incident.
“He knew it was inevitable he would be caught,” Brooksby said. That inevitability, the sheriff added, was what ultimately convinced Robinson to turn himself in.
Law enforcement treated the surrender with what Brooksby described as a “delicate and soft” approach to ensure Robinson followed through. The suspect allegedly even made “bizarre requests” as part of the handover, though Brooksby did not elaborate.
Once in custody, Robinson reportedly sat for more than two hours awaiting the lead investigator. “Our job was not to interview; our job was just to get him there,” Brooksby clarified.
Facing the Death Penalty
Robinson now faces seven charges, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, felony discharge of a firearm, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child. Prosecutors have already confirmed they will seek the death penalty.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox said Robinson is reportedly not cooperating with federal investigators since his arrest.

Court filings also allege Robinson tried to hide or remove the weapon used to kill Kirk, who was fatally shot in the neck while addressing more than 3,000 students at the TPUSA debate.
What Happened in Utah
Kirk, 31, was the founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth movement he launched in 2012 at just 18 years old. He became nationally known for fiery debates on college campuses and close ties to leaders like Donald Trump and JD Vance.
The shocking assassination was caught on video, showing Kirk collapse as blood streamed down his neck. Robinson allegedly fired from a rooftop overlooking the venue.
Texts allegedly exchanged between Robinson and his transgender partner later revealed the chilling motive. “I had enough of his hatred,” Robinson allegedly wrote. “Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”
