What began as a missing child alert in Pennsylvania ended in heartbreak when 9-year-old Renesmay Eutsey was found dead, her body stuffed inside a garbage bag and dumped in the Youghiogheny River.
A Chilling Discovery
Renesmay was reported missing on August 27, but investigators now say she was already dead when the call went out. Her body was discovered partially submerged early the next morning, after Kourtney Eutsey, 31, the live-in partner of Sarah Shipley, Renesmay’s court-ordered custodian, allegedly led state troopers to the site.
Authorities said the little girl had been the victim of physical abuse and neglect, and court records state her death was the result of “physical abuse combined with a failure to seek medical treatment.”

Eutsey is now facing charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault with attempt to cause injury with extreme indifference, aggravated assault of a child under 13, and concealing the death of a child.
Children Became Witnesses
Disturbingly, Renesmay’s siblings told police they watched the horror unfold inside the home she shared with Eutsey and Sarah Shipley, her court-ordered custodian.
The children described hearing Renesmay scream as the two women allegedly yelled at her and kicked her. One child told investigators, “I’m never going to see my baby sister again because she’s in heaven.”

According to the complaint, the children overheard the women discussing plans to take Renesmay “to a river far, far away.” Another recalled seeing Eutsey put Renesmay, who appeared lifeless, into a black trash bag and then into a tote.
A Disturbing Confession
Confronted by police, Eutsey allegedly admitted to dumping Renesmay’s body in the river. She later told investigators the girl had suffered a burn in the bathtub that became infected, and claimed she tried CPR when Renesmay began vomiting. Instead of calling 911, she said she panicked, fearing how the child’s injuries and thin frame would look to authorities.
Fayette County District Attorney Michael Aubele said the explanation did not change the facts. “When Renesmay was reported missing, Kourtney Eutsey knew exactly where this child was,” he said.
A Family Torn Apart
Shipley, who referred to herself as “Dad” while the children called Eutsey “Mom,” has not been charged. The home housed three other children, ages 2, 7, and 12 who are now in protective custody.
Eutsey, meanwhile, sits behind bars awaiting trial, accused of covering up the death of a little girl who trusted her as family.
For neighbors and relatives, the tragedy is almost too much to comprehend. What started as a hopeful search for a missing child has turned into a grim case of betrayal, abuse, and the haunting loss of a 9-year-old who never had a chance to grow up.
