George Strait’s wife Norma: The quiet love story behind the King of Country’s success

Behind the stage lights, platinum records, and sold-out stadiums, George Strait has had one constant for more than five decades — his wife, Norma Strait. Their love story, which began in small-town Texas, has carried them through youthful romance, heartbreaking loss, and country music history-making triumphs.

High school sweethearts who eloped to Mexico

George and Norma’s story started when they were teenagers in Pearsall, Texas. After dating on and off, the couple decided to make it official in a way that was anything but traditional: they eloped to Mexico on December 4, 1971, just before George enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Hawaii.

Later, they held a small church ceremony in their hometown of Pearsall, Texas, according to Country Now. In December 2021, they celebrated their 50th anniversary, with George serenading Norma during a Las Vegas concert with “I Cross My Heart.”

“She was 17, really hot. So we fell in love. We went to Mexico and eloped … 50 years ago today,” George told fans at the show, smiling at his bride.

Building a family through joy and heartbreak

The couple welcomed their first child, Jenifer Lynn Strait, in 1972, followed by son George “Bubba” Strait Jr. in 1981. But tragedy struck in 1986 when Jenifer died in a car accident at just 13 years old.

“We were blessed to have been able to spend 13 years with our beautiful daughter,” George reflected in 2012.

In her memory, George and Norma created the Jenifer Strait Memorial Foundation, which continues to support children’s charities across Texas.

Bubba is a competitive rodeo cowboy and songwriter, even collaborating with his dad on music. “Bubba really got me back into writing,” George said proudly.

Norma’s quiet strength

While George built his career on the road, Norma largely stayed home to raise Bubba, only later joining her husband on tour once their son finished high school.

“We love each other and we still like each other. A lot!” George once told PEOPLE, crediting Norma’s unwavering support through the highs and lows of their journey.

These days, the Straits are also grandparents. Bubba and his wife, Tamara, live down the street in Texas with their children, George ‘Harvey’ Strait III (born 2012) and Jilliann Louise Strait (born 2016).

A rare spotlight moment

Though Norma prefers to keep a low profile, she has occasionally stepped into George’s world of fame. In 2019, she even appeared in his music video for “Codigo,” filmed in Mexico, raising a glass and dancing with her husband.

She’s also been there for his biggest milestones, including his Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 CMA Awards, where George told the crowd: “So great to have you all here, but especially Norma, who’s supported me for just shy of 53 years in December.”

A love that still inspires

From high school halls to country music royalty, George and Norma Strait’s marriage has endured for more than five decades which is a rarity in both music and life.

It’s a love story marked by resilience, devotion, and an unshakable bond. And as George continues to sing to sold-out arenas, he always makes sure to acknowledge the woman who’s been there since the very beginning: his Norma.
