President Trump gives an interesting answer when asked about Travis and Taylor Swift’s engagement

After years of sharp words and online barbs, President Donald Trump offered an unexpectedly gracious response to the news that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are engaged.

During a cabinet meeting, a reporter interrupted policy talk with what she called the “biggest pop culture news of the year”: Swift and Kelce’s engagement. The room laughed, with Vice President JD Vance and Attorney General Pam Bondi joining in, before turning to the President for his reaction.

“I wish them a lot of luck,” Trump said with a smile. “He’s a great player and she’s a terrific person.”

A feud that once ran hot

The positive words surprised many, given Trump’s long-running feud with the pop superstar.

In recent years, the President has repeatedly gone after Swift for her outspoken liberal politics. Beginning in 2018, when she endorsed Democrat Phil Bredesen over Republican Marsha Blackburn in Tennessee’s Senate race. At the time, Trump quipped to reporters, “I like Taylor’s music about 25% less now.” The feud deepened in 2024 after Swift endorsed his opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris, prompting Trump to fire back on Truth Social with his bluntest attack yet: “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”

At February’s Super Bowl, where both Trump and Swift were in attendance, the President noted that the singer was loudly booed when cameras found her in the stands. “The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift,” he posted afterward.

And as recently as August, Trump repeated his disdain, writing: “Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying on TRUTH that I can’t stand her (HATE!) She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT. The tide has seriously turned — Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.”

A surprising olive branch

But Tuesday’s comments signal a notable shift, if not in friendship, then at least in tone.

Pressed further on his reaction to the engagement, Trump doubled down on the positivity: “No, I think he’s a great player, I think he’s a great guy. I think she’s a terrific person. So I wish them a lot of luck.”

It wasn’t the first time he softened. When asked about Swift and Kelce going public in 2023, Trump told the Daily Caller: “I wish the best for both of them. I hope they enjoy their life. Maybe together, maybe not — most likely not.”

Still, the warmth of his latest response caught many off guard, with fans online joking that Trump might be after an invite to the wedding.

Trump, Swift, and the cultural spotlight

For Trump, who remains a central figure not only in politics but also in pop culture, the moment highlighted his ability to command attention in both worlds.

Even as critics point to his past clashes with the singer, his willingness to congratulate her now was seen by some as a sign of confidence, showing a President who doesn’t need to hold grudges.

Whether it marks a true end to their feud or just a brief pause, Trump’s unexpected well wishes made headlines around the world, proving once again that when politics and celebrity collide, he’s always part of the conversation.
