Did Bleacher Report Just End the GOAT Debate Between Michael Jordan and LeBron James?

The GOAT debate has fueled barbershops, Twitter threads, and TV talk shows for decades. Michael Jordan or LeBron James, who really holds the crown?

According to Bleacher Report, the argument is over. But the reaction has only reignited the fire.

Jordan at No. 1

Bleacher Report recently polled its NBA experts, writers, and editors to create a consensus ranking of the top 100 players in league history. The results put Michael Jordan at No. 1, cementing his spot as the greatest of all time in their eyes.

The lowest Jordan was ranked by any voter was second. That level of consistency reflects what many old-school fans and analysts have long believed: six championships, six Finals MVPs, and an unmatched global impact make Jordan the benchmark.

LeBron Close Behind

Right behind him, of course, was LeBron James.

LeBron was slotted at No. 2 overall, with his lowest placement at third. Now entering his 23rd season, James is still producing at an elite level while holding the record as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

For many, the idea that LeBron is still ranked behind Jordan in 2025 feels outdated. One fan summed it up bluntly on social media: “It’s 2025. Why are we still putting MJ over LeBron?”

Another chimed in: “LeBron should be 1.”

The Top 10 — and the Snub That Stole the Show

The rest of the top 10 featured a mix of legends: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Bill Russell, Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Duncan, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, and Steph Curry.

But it wasn’t Jordan or LeBron that sparked the loudest reactions. It was Kobe Bryant, who was left out of the top 10 entirely, ranked No. 11 overall.

His highest ranking by a voter was No. 4. His lowest? 18th.

The omission didn’t sit well with fans, or even Kobe’s former teammate. “Kobe at 11 is criminal,” Shaquille O’Neal posted.

Others piled on: “Steph listed before Kobe is WRONG,” one fan wrote. Another pointed out, “Russell over Steph???”

Even players like Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki, and Giannis Antetokounmpo drew heated comparisons, with fans questioning whether the list reflected true greatness or modern recency bias.

A Debate That Won’t Die

Bleacher Report may have tried to settle the GOAT debate, but in reality, it only amplified it.

Jordan loyalists point to the perfect Finals record, the cultural dominance, and the unmatched killer instinct. LeBron fans counter with his all-around brilliance, longevity, and the fact that he’s still elite at 40.

And in between, fans continue to argue about Kobe, Wilt, Hakeem, and Curry which is proof that greatness can’t always be measured by rings or stats alone.

So, did Bleacher Report settle it? On paper, maybe. In reality? The only thing the rankings proved is that the GOAT debate isn’t going anywhere.
