Barack Obama’s rise to the presidency was historic. But according to Michelle Obama, it may have been accompanied by an unexpected superstition that still shapes his mornings.
On a recent episode of IMO, the podcast she co-hosts with her brother Craig Robinson, Michelle revealed that her husband of almost 30 years still carries pocketfuls of trinkets for good luck.
The former First Lady was discussing her stack of homemade bracelets with guest and basketball coach Dawn Staley, when she casually shared Barack’s unusual habit: he keeps a drawer full of tiny charms and takes a few with him every single day.

The power of tiny things
“Over the course of his first campaign, people would give him their lucky charms,” Michelle explained. “Little Buddhas, rabbit’s feet, rosary beads…things that mattered to them. And he kept it all.”
Now 64, the former president still makes room in his pocket each day for a rotating mix of these objects. It’s a quiet, personal ritual rooted in connection and gratitude.
While it may seem quirky, Barack has spoken before about the emotional weight these tokens carry. In a 2016 YouTube interview, he showcased a few of his favorites: a rosary from Pope Francis, a statue of the Buddha, a lucky poker chip from a tattooed biker, a small Hanuman figurine, and a Coptic cross.
“I’m not that superstitious,” he said back then, “but if I’m ever feeling tired or discouraged, I can reach in my pocket and think, ‘That’s something I can overcome because somebody gave me this privilege to work on these issues that affect them. I better get back to work.’”
What Michelle says about those divorce rumors
The revelation came amid renewed curiosity about the Obamas’ marriage. Recent months have seen a swirl of online speculation, largely fueled by Michelle’s absence from a few high-profile events, including Jimmy Carter’s funeral and President Trump’s second inauguration.
But when Barack joined his wife and brother-in-law on the podcast in July, they didn’t shy away from the chatter.
“Oh yeah, the rumor mill,” Michelle quipped when Craig joked about their relationship. Barack played along: “She took me back! It was touch and go for a while.”
Then came the serious part. Michelle, now 61, spoke candidly about their long marriage and made it clear where she stands.
“There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I thought about quitting my man,” she said. “We’ve had hard times, but also a lot of joy. I’ve become a better person because of the man I married.”
Still a team, just more private than before
Barack and Michelle Obama have always walked a delicate line between public and private life. And while their appearances together may have become less frequent, their words suggest a continued bond — one built on shared history, faith, and yes…a handful of lucky charms.
As Michelle summed it up: “It’s perspective. It’s a blessing.”
