It was meant to be a carefree ride in a toy car. But for 2-year-old Beckham Reed, a day of play turned into a life-threatening ordeal. And now, his family is praying for a miracle.
A Nest, A Swarm, and a Shocking Toll
Beckham, who was born with only one kidney, was stung more than 150 times by yellow jackets after accidentally bumping into a hidden nest while riding with his cousins in Georgia. The toddler was swarmed from head to toe.
His parents, Mariah and Peyton, rushed him to the hospital, where he was treated with morphine and Benadryl. At the time, doctors assessed his breathing and sent him home.

A Critical Turn Hours Later
But within a day, Beckham’s condition worsened. His skin turned yellow which is a sign of organ failure. He was rushed to a second hospital where doctors confirmed the devastating diagnosis: multiple organ failure affecting his heart, liver, and his only kidney.
“Due to his age and size and the amount of stings he had, his little body was unable to handle the amount of toxins,” explained Tiffany Hewatt, a registered nurse and close family friend, who is also managing the family’s GoFundMe.
A Brave Fight in the ICU
Beckham was immediately admitted to the ICU at Memorial Savannah Hospital. He was placed on a ventilator, connected to a dialysis machine, and started on intensive IV medications.
“There is no antivenom for yellow jackets,” Hewatt shared. “All they can do is support his body while the toxins work their way out.”

Beckham’s hemoglobin later dropped to a dangerously low 6.8, prompting a blood transfusion. He’s being tube-fed and was recently weaned off blood pressure medications.
One Tiny Fighter, One Giant Hope
“We are ready for him to be off the vent and to hear his voice again,” Hewatt wrote in a tearful update. “He is STRONG and a great kicker.”
Doctors are closely monitoring Beckham’s kidney function to determine whether he can safely be removed from dialysis. The coming days are crucial.
How to Help
As the family faces mounting hospital bills, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Beckham’s ongoing care. Supporters across the country have begun sharing his story with the hope of rallying aid and awareness.
