It wasn’t just NBA stars who made headlines Thursday night. Stephen A. Smith’s 17-year-old daughter, Samantha A. Smith, made a surprise appearance during ESPN’s live Finals coverage, delivering confident commentary and even going head-to-head with her dad.
The ESPN analyst was courtside with Elle Duncan at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for Game 6 of the NBA Finals when Duncan invited Samantha over from the sideline. What followed was part wholesome, part awkward, and fully unexpected.
“I’m Talking Here”: Samantha’s Star Moment
Smith didn’t look thrilled, but his daughter quickly embraced the spotlight. “Hi guys, I’m Samantha,” she told the camera before swatting away her dad’s interruption: “I’m talking here.”
She gushed about being at the game, joking she had “made so many friends” before Stephen A. chimed in, “You just got here five minutes ago.” But Samantha held her ground: “This is a really great experience and I feel really grateful to be here.”
Picks Against Dad on National TV
Later in the night, NBA Countdown host Malika Andrews brought Samantha back to the panel to give her pick. And she didn’t hesitate to go against her father.
“I’m going OKC,” she said, picking the Thunder over the Pacers. “Shai [Gilgeous-Alexander] has been killing it all season and he won MVP for a reason.”
Smith looked exasperated. “You’re going against your daddy on live television?” he asked. Her response? A simple shrug: “I think he knows I’m right.”
The panel loved it. Even Smith had to admit: “She usually beats me on predictions.”
Smith’s Daughter Stepping Into the Spotlight
Stephen A. Smith has long kept his personal life out of the spotlight. He didn’t publicly reveal he was a father until 2019. Samantha and her younger sister Nyla have largely stayed private, though Samantha is starting to make waves of her own.
She’s already pursuing an acting career, with roles in Peacock’s The Best Man: The Final Chapters and Disney+’s Saturdays.
“My daughters are everything to me,” Smith said during a 2023 interview. “I make sure that they are taken care of first.”
After her NBA Finals cameo, Samantha may be adding “sports analyst” to her résumé, whether her dad’s ready for it or not.
