Michelle Obama shares why she’s reclaiming her story — and makes a huge announcement

Michelle Obama has announced the release of a new book titled The Look, which will explore the intersection of fashion, public life, and personal identity.

The book, which includes 200 never-before-seen photographs, will be published by Penguin Random House on November 4, 2025. An audiobook version, narrated by Obama herself, will be released at the same time.

“It’s time for me to reclaim my story,” the former First Lady wrote on Instagram. She unveiled the book’s cover and shared early reflections about the project.

According to Penguin Random House, The Look offers a visual and narrative account of Obama’s evolving approach to personal style. It covers the early days of her husband’s Senate campaign, her time in the White House, and her post-presidency public life. The publisher describes the book as “a stunning journey” through fashion as both personal expression and public statement. It will be told “in her own words for the first time.”

Fashion as a Lens on Public Life

In a statement on social media, Obama wrote that she was frequently scrutinized for her appearance during her time in the White House. That included commentary on her clothing, hair, and presentation. She said the book reflects on that experience and offers her personal perspective.

“During our family’s time in the White House, the way I looked was constantly being dissected — what I wore, how my hair was styled,” she wrote.
“For a while now, I’ve been wanting to reclaim more of that story… and I’m thankful to be at a stage in life where I feel comfortable expressing myself freely.”

The Look includes commentary from Obama as well as contributions from members of her styling team. This includes stylist Meredith Koop, makeup artist Carl Ray, and hairstylists Yene Damtew and Njeri Radway. Designers who worked with Obama will also share background on notable outfits and their meaning.

In her introduction, Obama writes that while the book focuses on fashion, it also explores themes of confidence, identity, and authenticity. She says the goal is to encourage readers to reflect on how personal style is shaped by experience.

A Continuation of Obama’s Publishing Success

The Look marks Obama’s third major book release. It follows the commercial and critical success of her first two books.

Her 2018 memoir Becoming sold over 18 million copies across all formats and was translated into 50 languages. It won a GRAMMY Award for Best Spoken Word Album and was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.

Her second book, The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times, was released in 2022. It debuted as a #1 New York Times and USA Today bestseller. It was also named one of TIME’s 100 Must-Read Books of the year.

Since its release, The Light We Carry has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide. That includes more than 1.9 million units from the U.S. edition alone.

Penguin Random House says The Look continues that legacy. This time, the format blends visual storytelling with memoir-style reflection. It aims to provide new context for Obama’s public image through clothing, culture, and personal choice.
