Bill Maher brutally honest – Reveals why he never get married. The answer surprised many

He’s rich, famous, funny — and completely uninterested in walking down the aisle.

Comedian and Real Time host Bill Maher has spent decades making audiences laugh — and think — with his sharp political commentary and fearless stand-up. But despite his success, one thing he’s never pursued? Marriage.

In fact, Maher, 68, has made it abundantly clear: he prefers life solo — and always has.

“I Never Got That” — Maher Doesn’t Believe in Monogamy

During a 2019 interview with Howard Stern, Maher opened up about why the idea of spending your life with one person sounds less like romance and more like a life sentence.

“I never understood [marriage],” Maher admitted. “I’ve tried to have relationships, I’ve been in love… but I never understood how you can be with the same person day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. I just don’t get that.”

Instead, Maher confessed he enjoys meeting new partners — and isn’t interested in locking things down. Even when Howard gushed about the comfort of monogamy, Maher couldn’t relate.

Love it! Love it!” he said, when asked if he enjoys being alone. I like all my time. To decide what to do with all my time.”

Why Bill Maher Thinks Single Life Is Underrated

On his HBO talk show, Maher has even used his platform to defend single people. In a 2021 New Rules segment, he criticized U.S. policies for constantly prioritizing families over singles — and gave a surprisingly heartfelt explanation of why he loves his lifestyle.

“Getting a good night’s sleep, not sharing the remote, never having to have a relationship talk… priceless,” he quipped.

Marriage, in Maher’s world, is a bad deal. In one stand-up routine, he joked that being married is like trading “good sex for good food.” Yikes.

And while Maher has also cited political reasons for not having children — pointing out the environmental and economic toll of large families — it all boils down to personal preference.

“Not In The Traditional Sense” — But There Is Someone

While Maher insists he’s not the monogamous type, he’s not completely alone. When asked in a later conversation with Stern if he had a girlfriend, Maher smiled and said, “Not in the traditional sense.

He revealed there is someone in his life he “adores” — but admitted that there’s “usually more than one.
