Bronny James has faced significant challenges, from a life-threatening cardiac arrest to intense public scrutiny, but he remains focused on his recovery, mental health, and love for basketball.
Overcoming Health Scares and Mental Battles
As the son of NBA legend LeBron James, Bronny has always dealt with heightened expectations.
“I’ve become resilient over the past couple of years, overcoming injuries and mental illness by showing up, working hard every day, and staying the course,” James shared.
His health scare occurred during a practice session at the University of Southern California, where James collapsed due to a congenital heart condition.
After undergoing surgery and spending months in recovery, he was finally cleared by the NBA to return to the game in May.
Shortly after, the Lakers selected him as the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
For him, it was both a physical and mental battle, with lingering fear and uncertainty. “Trying to get past that,” he admitted. “It’s difficult, but I’m trying to work at it every day.”
Blocking Out the Noise and Focusing on Growth
Despite the pressures that come with his last name, Bronny remains focused on his own journey. He has played in seven NBA games so far, becoming part of history alongside his father as the league’s first father-son duo to share the court.
Rather than dwelling on the scrutiny surrounding his game, Bronny chooses to block out the outside noise. “It flies in one ear and out the other,” he said.
“My family, my parents, they are extremely thankful that I’m not only able to play basketball but also just walk around and speak to other people,” James said.
Handling Criticism and Proving Himself on the Court
ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith recently sparked controversy by suggesting that LeBron James should step back and allow Bronny to develop his career without added pressure. The remarks led to a tense exchange between LeBron and Smith during a Lakers-Knicks game.
Despite the outside noise, Bronny remains focused on his growth. His college stats led many to doubt his NBA potential, but he continues to work tirelessly to prove himself.
“I’m just showing up every day, trying to get better every day, trying to learn every day, and playing my game every day,” James said.
