The first official reports have been released regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of Hollywood actor Gene Hackman, who was found dead in his home alongside his wife, 31 years his junior, and their dog.
Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman (95) and his wife, Betsy Arakawa (63), showed no signs of external trauma, according to early autopsy reports following their deaths on Thursday, February 28.
The couple was discovered in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home after concerned neighbors and a maintenance worker were unable to reach them.
They were found in separate rooms, along with their beloved German Shepherd, which was also deceased. However, the couple’s two other dogs were found alive and in good condition.
Investigation and Possible Cause of Death
Authorities have classified the deaths as “suspicious” since the home’s front door was slightly open, though there were no signs of forced entry.
One theory being considered is carbon monoxide poisoning, which was suggested by the couple’s daughter. However, toxicology results are still pending.
A statement from law enforcement reads:
“In the early hours of Thursday, February 27, 2025, Hackman and Arakawa were transported to the Office of the Medical Investigator. An autopsy was performed. The initial findings did not indicate any external trauma on either individual.”

“That’s obviously very important evidence at the scene,” the police said. “So yes, we’re looking at that specifically and other medications that were possibly in the residence. That is something of concern.”
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact cause of death.
The remains of John Heckman and his wife were found in a gruesome state.
The body of Betsy was found in a state of decomposition, with swelling on her face and mummified hands and feet. Nearby, inside a closet, a dead dog was also discovered.
John Heckman, who was fully dressed, was found in another room near the kitchen. His body was in a similar state of decay, according to media reports.
The doors of their home in Santa Fe were open, and there were no signs of forced entry.
Sheriff Mendoza explained that authorities are working to piece together a timeline of events leading to the couple’s and their pet’s deaths. However, he noted that this could be a significant challenge since the couple was very private.
Hackman was wearing gray sweatpants, a long-sleeved blue shirt, brown slippers, and had a walking cane nearby.
Deputy Thomas, who examined the scene, noted a pair of sunglasses close to Hackman’s left side. Based on his training and experience, Thomas suspected that Hackman may have collapsed suddenly.
The report states that the actor’s body showed clear signs of death similar to those observed in his wife.
