A retired police dog in the UK has proven that heroes never truly retire. Bear, a 12-year-old German Shepherd, recently saved a missing person during a walk, earning him the prestigious Lifesaver Award from the Thin Blue Paw Foundation. This charity, dedicated to supporting police dogs, had previously helped fund one of Bear’s surgeries.
The incident took place on November 28th, during a routine walk designed to help Bear regain his stamina following surgery to remove tumors. The outing turned extraordinary when Bear’s heroic instincts kicked in once again.
Bear’s owners, Julia and Ian Pope, both retired police officers, took him to the picturesque South Downs in southern England to mark his 12th birthday. Julia had adopted Bear in 2020 after his career as a general police dog came to an end.

Reflecting on his years of service, she told The Argus, “Bear found several people during his working life who probably wouldn’t have survived without him, but he and his handler never got any recognition at the time because they were simply doing their job.”
During the celebratory walk, Bear unexpectedly led Julia and Ian into dense underbrush. There, they discovered a man who had fallen, was wet, disoriented, and unable to move. Authorities were already searching for him, but it was Bear who ultimately made the life-saving discovery.
Word of Bear’s heroic deed reached the Thin Blue Paw Foundation and the Sussex Police Department, prompting the nomination for his Lifesaver Award. The award was presented at a ceremony held at Sussex Police Headquarters, where Bear’s former handler, Iain, was also in attendance.
“For him to get this award now, in his retirement, and for his former handler, Iain, to have been there too, is very special,” Julia said. “We’re all super proud of him.”
