Whoopi Goldberg slammed for defending Tiger Woods after DUI arrest

Whoopi Goldberg is facing backlash after defending Tiger Woods during a heated discussion about his recent DUI arrest.

The conversation unfolded on The View, where Goldberg joined co-hosts Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, and guest panelist Whitney Cummings to discuss the incident.

Goldberg opened by acknowledging her personal connection to Woods, saying, “Tiger is a friend of mine and I wish him nothing but the best,” while adding that she does not believe in “kicking a man when he’s down.”

Woods, 50, was arrested on March 27 in Jupiter Island, Florida, after crashing his SUV while attempting to pass a truck towing a trailer. Authorities said the vehicle overturned during the incident, leading to charges including DUI, property damage, and refusal to submit to a urine test.

On-Air Clash Over Responsibility and Accountability

The discussion quickly turned pointed when Behar questioned why Woods had not taken precautions. “He’s very rich. Just get a driver,” Behar remarked, later jokingly adding, “Just not Justin Timberlake,” referencing Justin Timberlake’s own 2024 arrest for driving while ability impaired.

Hostin added context about Woods’ physical condition, noting that he told investigators he had undergone seven back surgeries and more than 20 procedures on his leg, and lives with chronic pain.

Despite this, Behar maintained her stance, prompting Goldberg to respond again in Woods’ defense. She argued that relying on a driver could bring its own scrutiny, saying, “You don’t want to be that guy that everyone says, ‘Why is he always being driven around?’ You can’t win.”

Cummings briefly interjected with a remark about elitism, which Goldberg appeared to agree with, reiterating that Woods is receiving the help he needs.

Viewers Push Back as Woods Addresses Arrest

The exchange sparked strong reactions online, with many viewers criticizing Goldberg’s defense of Woods. Several social media users argued that wealth and status eliminate any justification for driving while impaired, while others expressed disappointment in both Goldberg and Hostin for appearing sympathetic.

Many critics emphasized that there should be “no excuses” for dangerous driving, regardless of personal struggles or medical conditions.

Meanwhile, Woods publicly addressed the situation on March 31, acknowledging the seriousness of the incident. In a statement, he said he is stepping away to seek treatment and focus on his health, calling it necessary for his recovery and future well-being.

He also requested privacy for himself and his family as he works through the situation.

Woods is scheduled to appear in court next month. The arrest comes shortly before The Masters, where there had been speculation about his potential participation.

This is not his first legal issue involving driving. In 2017, Woods was arrested for DUI after being found in his vehicle with multiple substances in his system, including painkillers, a sleep aid, and an anti-anxiety medication.

The latest incident, combined with the public debate it has sparked, continues to place Woods at the center of both legal scrutiny and widespread public discussion.
