Victoria Principal, best known as Pamela Ewing on the drama Dallas, recently opened up about some memorable episodes of the ’80s show. She revealed that the two-part episode “Mastectomy” initially sparked anger in her, but later became her favorite due to her co-star Barbara Bel Geddes’ bravery.
The 73-year-old actress shared, “I continued to love working on Dallas, but a special episode stands out: ‘Mastectomy.’” When she first read the script, she was furious, thinking it exploited Barbara’s personal story. However, Barbara assured her that she was involved in the decision and even helped with the story and writing.
Barbara Bel Geddes had undergone a double mastectomy after a breast cancer diagnosis around the same time her husband passed away. Principal added, “Her bravery and willingness to publicly shed light on this subject was an act of courage. She was my hero. These episodes are the ‘diamonds of Dallas.’ That is why she won that Emmy!” Bel Geddes, who played Miss Ellie Ewing, passed away in 2005 from lung cancer at 82.
Despite its slow start, Dallas became hugely popular. Principal recalls realizing the show’s impact in 1980 when fans at a furniture store overwhelmed her for autographs, leading the manager to lock her in his office and call the police. “I drove home with a new awareness of Dallas’ popularity and without that new sofa!” Principal said.
