Second Lady Usha Vance has offered the public its first look at her family of six, sharing a series of new photographs featuring Vice President JD Vance, their newborn son Alec Neel Vance and their three older children.
The images, posted after the birth of the couple’s fourth child, capture the family’s first official portraits together while also highlighting the realities of photographing four young children.
Among the photos, JD Vance is seen holding baby Alec as the family gathers on a couch. Another image shows one of the children embracing Usha while their daughter sits between her parents, creating a candid glimpse into the family’s newest chapter.
Alongside the photos, Usha added a light-hearted message about the challenge of getting everyone to cooperate for the camera.
“Thank you for all the good wishes as we settle into life as a family of six,” she wrote.
She continued, “Meet Alec — and enjoy these attempts at taking a decent family photo with four kids!”
A new chapter for the Vance family
JD and Usha Vance welcomed Alec Neel Vance at Walter Reed Medical Center on July 19.
The newborn joins the couple’s three older children, Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel.
When announcing Alec’s birth, the vice president and second lady confirmed that both mother and baby were healthy and shared that their children were excited to meet their new little brother.
In their birth announcement, the couple also thanked the military doctors and medical staff who cared for their family.
“The incredible military doctors and staff members of Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit have been a blessing,” they said, adding that they were deeply grateful for the care they received.
The meaning behind Alec’s name
Following the birth announcement, attention has also turned to the meaning of the newborn’s name.
According to etiquette expert Jo Hayes, Alec is a shortened form of Alexander, a traditional name meaning “defender” or “protector.” Hayes said the choice also carries strong Catholic associations, reflecting JD Vance’s faith journey.
Hayes also explained that Alec’s middle name, Neel, comes from Sanskrit and means “blue,” describing it as a tribute to Usha Vance’s Indian heritage.
She added that the combination reflects a broader trend of parents choosing traditional names with distinctive modern touches.
The arrival of Alec also marked a historic milestone, with Usha becoming the first second lady in more than 150 years to give birth while her husband was serving as vice president.
As the family settles into life with four children, Usha’s latest photographs provide a warm glimpse into that transition, pairing joyful moments with an honest reminder that even official family portraits can be unpredictable when young children are involved.
