Second Lady Usha Vance is settling into a new rhythm at home after welcoming her fourth child with Vice President JD Vance, and she says the transition has brought an unexpected amount of joy to their family.
In her first interview since giving birth to Alec Neel Vance on July 19, Usha spoke candidly to Fox News Digital about becoming a mother of four and watching her three older children adjust to having a newborn brother.
Usha, 40, described the experience so far as “really lovely,” revealing that Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel have enthusiastically embraced their newest sibling.
“My older kids see this as only good for themselves,” she said. “Like, there’s only one more kid to add to their pack. The parents are now outnumbered two to one!”
Alec’s siblings are eager to help
Rather than struggling with the arrival of another child, Usha said the older children have been excited to participate in caring for Alec.
“One of the things that has just been beautiful to see is how excited my older kids are about their new brother,” she told Fox News Digital.
According to Usha, the children compete for opportunities to hold Alec and regularly stay nearby during diaper and clothing changes so they can help.
They have also become involved with burping and entertaining their brother or fetching something when he needs it.
For Usha, seeing her three older children develop such enthusiasm for Alec has been one of the most rewarding parts of becoming a family of six.
At the same time, she and JD are making a deliberate effort to preserve individual time with Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel.
Usha recently took her middle child on a one-on-one outing that included visiting a bookstore, having lunch and making a return at a shop. She described their time together as “really special.”
Although she acknowledged there could be challenges ahead, Usha said the children currently appear to be thriving.
From uncertainty to a happier family dynamic
The arrival of Alec followed a period when Usha wasn’t entirely certain about expanding their family again.
She previously acknowledged experiencing “all sorts of angst” over the decision because she felt their family was already complete and their children were beginning to enter a different stage of childhood.
Her perspective has changed since Alec’s arrival.
“I’m really glad that we took this plunge,” Usha said, explaining that taking a risk with what had already been a settled family dynamic has ultimately made their household even happier.
Alec was born at Walter Reed Medical Center on July 19. He joined Ewan, 8, Vivek, 5, and Mirabel, 4.
Usha’s pregnancy also marked a historic chapter for the second family, as she became the first second lady in decades to experience a pregnancy while her husband was serving as vice president.
Throughout the pregnancy, she continued making public appearances, attending White House events and accompanying JD Vance on trips abroad.
Preparing four children for what’s next
With summer break continuing, life at home is already beginning to shift toward the upcoming school year.
Usha said her older children are waiting to discover their class schedules and which friends will be joining them. The family is gradually collecting school supplies and preparing shoes and clothing throughout August.
Rather than doing everything at once, Usha said they try to turn the preparations into something celebratory so returning to early school mornings does not feel like such an abrupt change.
Beyond family life, the second lady is also looking ahead to expanding her Storytime with the Second Lady podcast.
For now, however, Usha’s first reflections after Alec’s birth paint a picture of a household adjusting to four children—with plenty of helping hands and three older siblings delighted to have a new baby brother.
