She was Bruce Springsteen’s first wife & ‘accidentally’ became an actress. Where is she now?

Before Bruce Springsteen became known for his decades-long marriage to Patti Scialfa, the rock icon was briefly married to actress and model Julianne Phillips — a relationship that unfolded quickly and ended just a few years later.

Their marriage, which lasted from 1985 to 1989, remains one of the most talked-about chapters of Springsteen’s personal life, marked by a whirlwind romance and a difficult separation.

A Chance Meeting That Led to Marriage

Phillips and Springsteen first crossed paths in October 1984, when his booking agent, Barry Bell, introduced them at a concert in Los Angeles. Bell later told biographer Peter Ames Carlin that he believed the two would connect, describing Phillips as grounded and a good match for the musician.

The relationship moved quickly. According to the Los Angeles Times, the couple married on May 13, 1985, just seven months after meeting. The ceremony took place at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake Oswego, Oregon, where Phillips had been raised.

In an effort to avoid media attention, the wedding date was moved forward, resulting in an intimate ceremony attended by only about 40 close friends and family members. Springsteen wore a blue suit, while Phillips chose an antique-style gown and carried gardenias. Among those present were members of Springsteen’s band, including Steven Van Zandt and Clarence Clemons.

Her Life Before the Spotlight

Long before her relationship with Springsteen, Phillips had already begun building her own career. Born in Evanston, Illinois, and raised in Lake Oswego, Oregon, she was the youngest of six children, according to the biography Bruce.

She initially worked as an assistant manager at a department store in Los Angeles before transitioning into modeling. In 1982, she signed with Elite Modeling Agency, as she later told the Chicago Tribune.

Her move into acting came unexpectedly. In the same interview, Phillips explained that her agency mistakenly sent her to the wrong audition, which ultimately opened the door to television roles.

She went on to appear in several projects throughout the 1980s, including the TV films “Summer Fantasy” and “His Mistress,” as well as feature films such as “A Fine Mess” alongside Ted Danson and “Fletch Lives” with Chevy Chase.

Struggles Behind Closed Doors

Despite the excitement surrounding their marriage, the relationship faced challenges early on. In his memoir Born to Run, Springsteen described experiencing severe anxiety following their wedding, including panic attacks and troubling thoughts he attempted to keep hidden.

He later acknowledged that these internal struggles affected the relationship, admitting that he had difficulty adjusting to married life. In a 1997 interview with The New York Times, he reflected candidly: “My first wife’s one of the best people I’ve ever met… But we were pretty different, and I realized I didn’t know how to be married.”

Springsteen also wrote that he developed unfounded fears about Phillips’ intentions, despite later recognizing those concerns were not rooted in reality. He described her as someone who genuinely loved him and had no ill intent.

A Quiet Separation and Public Fallout

The couple separated privately in 1988, but the lack of a public statement led to widespread media attention when the news eventually surfaced. That same year, Phillips filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, according to United Press International. The divorce was finalized on March 1, 1989.

Springsteen later expressed regret over how the situation unfolded. In Born to Run, he admitted he handled the separation poorly and placed Phillips in a difficult position. Reflecting on the aftermath in Carlin’s biography, he said he felt he had failed to protect her from the public scrutiny that followed.

“I didn’t protect Juli… it was cruel for people to find out the way they did,” he said, acknowledging the pain caused by the situation.

Life After Bruce — and Out of the Spotlight

Following the end of her marriage, Phillips stepped away from the intense public attention that came with being linked to one of the world’s most famous musicians. She has remained largely private about both the relationship and her life afterward.

However, she has spoken positively about the personal growth she experienced during that period. In Carlin’s 2012 biography, she credited Springsteen with expanding her perspective, describing the time as one of “incredible growth and introspection.”

Today, Phillips is rarely seen in public, maintaining the same low profile she has chosen for decades — a stark contrast to the high-profile romance that once placed her at the center of global attention.
