Their son Paul’s heart journey

The Baiers learned soon after Paul was born that he had five significant heart defects and needed surgery within his first days of life.

“We went from the highest highs to the lowest lows in a really short time,” Bret told the Daily Mail.

Paul underwent his first major open-heart operation 10 days after birth. Bret explained that surgeons used a donated baby aorta to help his heart pump correctly, but the repair could not grow with him.

Paul needed further open-heart surgeries at 10 months, six years and 13 and a half. Bret said his son also underwent 10 angioplasties and a stomach surgery.

“We spent a lot of time in the hospital and he’s doing great,” Bret said.
