Maryland couple married for 70 years die side by side after devastating crash
A Maryland community is mourning the loss of a couple whose lifelong bond remained unbroken until their final moments.
Kenneth and Marilyn Oland, married for seven decades, died together in a Baltimore hospital after being taken off life support following a serious car crash, according to their obituary and multiple reports. The couple had been involved in a collision on Route 15 near their home in Thurmont just days earlier.

Kenneth, 90, was behind the wheel at the time of the crash, while Marilyn, 88, was in the passenger seat. Both were transported to the hospital and placed on life support as a result of complications from the incident.
Six days later, on Monday, they passed away side by side.
A lifetime of shared devotion
Those who knew them described a relationship defined by constant companionship and unwavering commitment.
“I don’t think one could’ve lasted without the other,” their friend Nancy Echard told Fox 5, reflecting on the depth of their connection.
The Olands were high school sweethearts who married in July 1955 and built a life centered around family, faith, and community. They were parents to three children, grandparents to five, and great-grandparents to six.
Their bond was so strong that even in their final moments, they were not separated, remaining together until the very end.
The couple were familiar faces at the Thurmont Senior Center, where they regularly attended activities, including bingo twice a month. On the day of the crash, they had been at the center and left shortly after lunch, according to an employee.

In a tribute shared on Facebook, the center remembered them as a pair rarely seen apart.
“You rarely saw one without the other, and that was no accident, they were two people who genuinely chose each other, every single day,” the post read. “They were a living reminder of what lasting love looks like.”
Community members described them as individuals who consistently showed kindness, whether through visiting friends in nursing homes with flowers or bringing loved ones together for celebrations.
Marilyn dedicated 25 years to working in chiropractic care before retiring in 2023, while Kenneth spent his career in marketing.
A legacy defined by love and kindness
Family members have found some comfort in the way the couple’s lives ended—together, just as they had lived.
“If there’s one thing we could share about my grandparents, it’s not only the 70 years they’ve had together… they chose to go away together and leave this earth together,” their granddaughter Kristie Hopkins told Fox 5.

She added that their lasting impact goes beyond the length of their marriage.
“Their legacy is just how to be humans — be humble and kind and graceful to others and help strangers in need.”
For those who knew Kenneth and Marilyn Oland, their story stands as a quiet but powerful example of enduring love, shared purpose, and a life lived side by side.
