Five-year-old hailed a hero after saving brother from icy creek as he fights for recovery
A five-year-old boy from Minnesota is being recognized for an act of extraordinary bravery after rescuing his younger brother from freezing waters — a decision that left him fighting for his own life.
Ashkan “Ash” Thibodeaux jumped into an icy creek in Itasca County on Easter Sunday to save his brother Wyatt, who had fallen into the water. According to details shared on the family’s Caring Bridge page and reported by the Daily Mail, Ash was able to guide his brother back to safety but was unable to pull himself out.
Emergency crews from the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly and pulled Ash from the creek. First responders performed CPR on the child for more than six hours before he was airlifted to a hospital in Minneapolis.
His father, Nick Adams, later wrote on Caring Bridge: “Hundreds of people did everything they could for Ash over this period of time and our family is so grateful.”
Doctors placed the young boy on temporary life support for over 24 hours as they worked to stabilize him. Against the odds, his body began to respond, marking the first signs of a possible recovery.
Signs of recovery after major surgery
In the days that followed, Adams continued to share updates on his son’s condition, describing what he called a remarkable and ongoing recovery process.
“Go Ash, Go has become a common phrase at the Minnesota Children’s Hospital,” he wrote, adding that his son’s progress feels like “a miracle” that is still unfolding.
Medical updates revealed that Ash’s vital signs — including heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature — had returned to normal ranges. His platelets stabilized, and his kidneys showed enough improvement to avoid further dialysis.
After being taken off sedation, Ash began moving his body, responding to commands, and even attempting a high-five during therapy sessions. He also started speech therapy while still intubated and was able to produce a small sound.
Earlier this month, on April 7, Ash underwent major surgery to remove severely damaged parts of his digestive system, a procedure his father described as “scary” but necessary.
Community rallies behind young hero
Back home, support for Ash and his family has grown rapidly. The five-year-old plays hockey with the Greenway Mini Mites, and fellow parents quickly organized efforts to help.
Kayla Swanson, a hockey mom, told the Daily Mail: “As soon as we got word of the news on Ash our mini mite moms teamed up and were on it — brainstorming ways we can support this family.”
A fundraiser selling T-shirts reading “Stick together for Ash” has already sold hundreds, with local businesses contributing additional support through donated items. A GoFundMe campaign has also raised more than $40,000 to assist with medical expenses.
Swanson added: “Ash is a warrior — with a very long road ahead and we need to focus on prayers for this sweet boy and ways to support them.”
While his condition remains serious, Ash is currently stable, and his recovery continues to inspire those around him.
