A South Florida community is mourning the loss of a mother and her two young daughters after investigators concluded they were killed in a murder-suicide inside a home in Doral.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, 46-year-old Melanie Lauren Hyer, her daughters Savannah, 11, and Sienna, 8, and the girls’ father, 42-year-old Ryan Charles Whiten, were found dead following a welfare check at Hyer’s residence on Tuesday evening.

Authorities said all four suffered stab wounds. Detectives later announced that their investigation determined Whiten killed Hyer and the two children before taking his own life.
“The investigation revealed that Mr. Whiten committed these heinous acts and then took his own life,” the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Officials have not released a possible motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Family history emerges as investigation continues
Sources told NBC6 that Hyer and Whiten had separated years ago and were co-parenting their daughters at the time of their deaths.
Court records cited by NBC6 show that Hyer finalized a divorce in March. Both Hyer and Whiten had been married to other people following their separation.

Whiten’s former wife, who spoke to 7 News Miami without being identified, described the relationship between Hyer and Whiten as difficult for years due to ongoing disputes involving their daughters. She said she was stunned by what happened.
“He was always so sweet with his girls and loved them deeply. I don’t know what happened,” she told the station.
The four family members were discovered inside the Doral home after deputies responded to conduct a welfare check, leading to the tragic discovery.
Community pays tribute to mother and daughters
Hyer was a well-known probate real estate agent in South Florida who specialized in luxury waterfront and commercial properties. According to her LinkedIn profile, she frequently appeared on news programs as an industry expert throughout her career.
Doral Mayor Christi Fraga remembered Hyer as a devoted mother and active member of the community.
“When I got the news, it definitely hit close to home,” Fraga wrote on Instagram, describing Hyer as “a light of sunshine” who was always willing to help and participate in school activities.

The loss has also deeply affected the local youth sports community. Savannah and Sienna attended Downtown Doral Elementary School and were members of the Doral Field Hockey team.
In a statement shared on social media, the organization said the girls and their mother were an important part of the community and would be remembered for their kindness, friendships, and positive influence on those around them.
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family, friends and all those whose lives were touched by them,” the team wrote.
A Catholic Mass honoring Hyer and her daughters is scheduled for Friday evening, with organizers asking the community to keep their family and loved ones in their prayers as they navigate an unimaginable loss.
