Emmy Award-winning television news anchor Ernie Anastos has died at the age of 82 following complications from pneumonia. His wife, Kelly Anastos, confirmed that he passed away on January 12 at Northern Westchester Hospital.
Anastos was a familiar presence in New York media for decades, building a career that spanned more than 50 years. He anchored evening newscasts across several major stations, including UPN 9, ABC 7, CBS 2, and FOX 5.
A Career Spanning Decades of Major News Coverage
Over the course of his career, Anastos earned more than 30 Emmy awards and nominations, including recognition for Best Newscast in New York. He first entered broadcasting through radio in Boston during the mid-1970s before transitioning to television.
His rise to prominence came in 1978 when he joined WABC as an anchor for Eyewitness News at 11 p.m., later moving to the 5 p.m. broadcast. Throughout the years, he reported on major national events, including the September 11 attacks and the coronavirus pandemic.
In recognition of his contributions to the field, Anastos was inducted into the New York State Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2024.
