Authorities have confirmed that a Michigan father fatally shot his wife and their six children before taking his own life and intentionally setting fire to the family’s home, bringing clarity to a tragedy that has devastated an entire community.
Autopsy findings released by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office determined that Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, killed his wife, Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children, who ranged in age from five to 15, before dying by suicide. Investigators also believe the fire was deliberately set in multiple locations inside the home after the shootings.
Emergency responders were initially called to the Grand Haven Township neighborhood after reports of a smoky smell. After receiving additional calls several hours later, deputies returned, found smoke coming from the residence and discovered the family dead inside.
According to investigators, some of the victims were found in bedrooms. The family’s dogs and at least one cat also died in the fire.
Sheriff Eric DeBoer described the case as “an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand.”
Family remembered for kindness and devotion
Amanda, known to many as Mandy, worked as a substitute teacher at Grand Haven Area Public Schools, where colleagues praised her compassion toward students.
Earlier this year, the district recognized her publicly, saying she consistently showed empathy, patience and care while going above and beyond to support children.
Her parents, Becky and Steve Lawwill, remembered their daughter as a loving mother devoted to her family, saying they treasured every moment spent with her and her children as they grieve the unimaginable loss.
The couple married in 2009 after meeting while working together at a beverage company. According to a parenting blog Amanda maintained for several years, they welcomed four biological children before later adopting two daughters.
Kristopher most recently served as vice president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association’s CPR and first aid division while working remotely. The organization confirmed his employment had ended earlier this month but did not provide additional details.
A family familiar with heartbreak
The recent tragedy follows another painful chapter for Amanda’s family.
In 2020, her brother Allston Lawwill died from an accidental fentanyl overdose after authorities determined the cocaine he purchased had contained fentanyl. His death prompted Amanda to organize an online fundraiser to help support his widow and three children.
In her message at the time, she wrote that her family was struggling to process the unexpected loss while asking others to keep them in their thoughts and prayers.
Amanda also referenced another younger brother, Dillan, who had previously died, writing that Allston was now “with his baby brother, Dillan.” No further details about Dillan’s death were included.
Following the deaths of Amanda, Kristopher and the six children, relatives have once again expressed profound grief, with Amanda’s sister saying the family’s hearts were “utterly shattered” as they tried to make sense of what had happened.
Friends of Becky and Steve Lawwill have since launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with expenses and establish a scholarship in memory of the Karolkiewicz children.
As investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the shootings and fire, authorities have said the exact timeline remains under review, even as the autopsy findings have established how all eight family members died.
