Pioli: “If we had stayed in 11 we would have not lost. Now let’s focus on the Champions League”

Coach Stefano Pioli spoke to DAZN in the post-match interview after Atalanta-Milan 3-2. Here are his statements following the bitter defeat in Bergamo:

Stefano Pioli is bitter after the last-minute defeat against Atalanta: “With numerical parity, it seemed like the momentum was more on our side we surely wouldn’t have lost- the Milan coach analyzed on DAZN.

“We need to be clearer in defence because these mistakes cost us dearly. When you concede 3 goals, it means you haven’t worked well defensively as a team. We weren’t smart in dealing with their movements. It was a game from which we wanted to come home with a positive result, but instead, we leave here with a heavy loss.

Now the top spot seems distant, but first, there’s the crucial Champions League clash against Newcastle: “We wanted to string together a series of victories, but we couldn’t. Now let’s focus on winning as many matches as possible, and then look at the standings. On Wedensday we have a very important game in Europe, and we only have one result available a win.”

For Wednesday’s match, Rafa Leao is expected to be back: “He should be fine; tomorrow he will join the team. The next few days will be crucial.”

Then, another reflection on the game in Bergamo and the injury crisis: “There are many Absentees, but in the first half, we were even better than our opponents. If it had ended 2-2, many things would have been positive. We wanted to build continuity, but unfortunately, our opponents in the box were smarter than us.”

Finally, a comment on his current situation and the criticisms he’s facing: “That’s how it is. I’m the coach of Milan, expectations are high, and the results don’t match them. I just have to focus on the work and getting the best out of the players.
