President Donald Trump has publicly congratulated Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance following the birth of their fourth child, sharing the first photo of the couple’s newborn son and describing him as a “perfect baby boy.”
Trump posted the image on Monday, one day after the Vance family announced the arrival of baby Alec Neel Vance.
Alongside the photo, the president wrote: “Congratulations! A perfect baby boy for the wonderful Vance family.”
The image showed newborn Alec being held by his older brother Vivek while his sister Mirabel sat beside them, offering the public its first glimpse of the newest member of the Vance family.
The Vances announce their newest addition
JD and Usha Vance revealed on Sunday that their son had been born earlier that morning.
In a statement shared on social media, the vice president announced: “We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning.”
He added that both mother and son were doing well, writing that “Usha and the baby are happy and healthy,” while also sharing that their children were excited to welcome their younger brother.
The couple also thanked the military doctors and medical staff at Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit, calling them “a blessing” and expressing their gratitude for the care they provided.
Alec Neel joins the couple’s three older children—Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel—making the Vances a family of six.
A birth that makes history
Beyond the family’s personal celebration, the arrival of Alec Neel Vance also represents a rare moment in American political history.
According to reports, Usha Vance became the first sitting second lady to give birth in more than 150 years. The last time a vice president welcomed a child while serving in office was in 1870, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his wife, Ellen, celebrated the birth of their son.
JD and Usha first announced in January that they were expecting their fourth child.
Throughout her pregnancy, Usha continued participating in official engagements, traveling alongside the vice president until the final weeks before the birth. She also continued recording episodes of her “Storytime with the Second Lady” YouTube series.
Her maternity clothing later became the subject of commentary after The New York Times published a fashion critique. Usha responded on X with humor, joking about her inexpensive maternity wardrobe and inviting people instead to enjoy her children’s reading series.
JD Vance also joined the exchange, noting that his wife had purchased a $50 dress for $8.75 before adding, “America: meet your next director of the federal budget!”
The family’s decision to welcome another child
The vice president has frequently spoken about supporting larger families and encouraging parenthood.
During the 2025 March for Life rally in Washington, D.C., he said, “I want more babies in the United States of America.”
JD Vance also wrote in his memoir that he and Usha had at one point decided against having more children because of the demands of public life. He later shared that the death of his friend Charlie Kirk changed their perspective, writing that after Kirk’s passing, “Something changed for Usha,” before the couple learned they were expecting another son.
Usha Vance later told CBS that conversations with Erika Kirk about family had been deeply moving, though she said they were not the sole reason behind the couple’s decision to have a fourth child.
The vice president and second lady first met while attending Yale Law School, graduating in 2013 before marrying the following year in ceremonies honoring both her Hindu faith and his Christian faith.
With President Trump’s public congratulations and the release of the family’s first photo of baby Alec Neel, the Vances are celebrating not only the arrival of their fourth child but also a milestone that holds a unique place in the history of the vice presidency.
