ABC News has appointed longtime Los Angeles meteorologist Leslie Lopez to a new national role, marking a significant transition after more than a decade of local broadcasting. Beginning April 10, Lopez relocates to New York City to join the network’s weather team, stepping into a position previously held by Janai Norman.
Her appointment will place her across major ABC News programs, including “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight with David Muir.”
From Local Forecasts to National Spotlight
Lopez built her reputation at ABC7 Los Angeles, where she served as the morning meteorologist starting in 2016. During her tenure, she delivered early morning forecasts for the 4 a.m., 5 a.m., and 6 a.m. newscasts, becoming a familiar presence for viewers across Southern California.

Prior to joining ABC7, she gained experience in multiple roles at KUSI-TV in San Diego and worked as both a reporter and weekend weather anchor at KGET in Bakersfield.
Her move to ABC News represents a transition from regional broadcasting to a national platform within the network’s news division.
In a message reflecting on her time in Los Angeles, Lopez acknowledged the connection she built with viewers, stating that the community had welcomed her into their homes and supported her through major weather events and personal milestones.

Joining a Prominent Weather Team
At ABC News, Lopez will collaborate with several well-known figures in the network’s weather unit, including chief meteorologist and climate correspondent Ginger Zee, “Good Morning America” contributor Sam Champion, and senior meteorologist Lee Goldberg.
Katie den Daas, ABC News senior vice president of global newsgathering, emphasized Lopez’s strengths, noting her passion for science, ability to communicate weather stories effectively, and strong connection with audiences.
Network leadership described her as a valuable addition to ABC News’ expanding coverage across its platforms.

Transition Follows Janai Norman’s Departure
Lopez’s arrival comes shortly after Janai Norman’s unexpected exit from her role on “Good Morning America.” Norman, who had been part of the weekend edition since 2022, indicated that her departure was not mutual and that her time on the program ended sooner than anticipated.
In a public statement, Norman expressed disappointment over the abrupt conclusion, sharing that she had hoped for more time in the role and valued her connection with colleagues and viewers.

Her departure created the opening that Lopez now fills as ABC News reshapes its on-air lineup.
Following the announcement, viewers and supporters praised Lopez’s professionalism and presence, with many noting that her promotion to the national stage was well deserved. At the same time, audiences in Southern California expressed that she would be missed after years of consistent morning coverage.
The move marks a major milestone in Lopez’s career, transitioning her from a trusted local voice to a national figure in broadcast meteorology.
