Gavin Newsom’s wife faces backlash after resurfaced clip reveals she gave her sons dolls to play with

Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the wife of Gavin Newsom, is drawing renewed attention after past comments about parenting and gender roles began circulating again on social media.

In an undated interview that has recently resurfaced, Siebel Newsom spoke about intentionally challenging traditional expectations while raising her children. “I’ve given our boys dolls… to learn that care and caregiving is not just an activity that’s reserved for women, but that it’s also an activity that is a responsibility of men,” she said.

Views on Gender Roles and Representation

Siebel Newsom also described how she approaches storytelling with her children, including altering characters while reading.

“If I’m reading a book and the protagonist is a male, I just change the ‘he’ to a ‘she,’” she explained, adding that the goal is to help normalize the idea that women can be central figures in stories. She emphasized that this approach is used for both her sons and daughters to reinforce broader representation.

Her comments extended to a wider perspective on societal norms. She described the current moment as one where people are “deconstructing” traditional gender roles and focusing more on shared human experiences.

Similar views were expressed in a 2016 interview with Salon, where Siebel Newsom discussed encouraging both boys and girls to explore activities beyond conventional expectations.

She said boys should be encouraged to nurture and develop empathy, while girls should feel equally supported in engaging in physical play and building activities. The approach, she noted, is aimed at challenging what she described as limiting stereotypes placed on children.

Separately, comments from a 2022 interview have also reappeared online. In that conversation with journalist Elex Michaelson, Siebel Newsom said that evangelicals are “pulling us back as a country.”

The resurfacing of these remarks has sparked renewed discussion online, bringing attention once again to her views on parenting, gender roles, and broader cultural issues.
