Savannah Guthrie breaks down in first interview since mom’s disappearance, says the situation is ‘unbearable’

Savannah Guthrie speaks out in emotional first interview after mother’s disappearance

Savannah Guthrie has delivered her first on-camera interview since the disappearance of her mother, offering a deeply emotional account of the ongoing ordeal and the toll it has taken on her and her family.

Speaking with Hoda Kotb in a preview shared on the Today show, Guthrie appeared visibly shaken as she described the experience as overwhelming and relentless. “We are in agony. We are in agony. It is unbearable,” she said during the interview, her voice breaking.

Her mother, Nancy Guthrie, 84, was taken from her home in Tucson, Arizona, on February 1. More than 50 days later, there have been no confirmed sightings and no arrests in connection with the case.

A nightly struggle no family can escape

During the conversation, Guthrie spoke candidly about the emotional weight she carries each day — and night. She revealed that she wakes up every night imagining what her mother may have endured, describing those thoughts as “unthinkable.”

“I wake up every night, in the middle of the night, every night,” she said. “And in the darkness, I imagine her terror… and it is unthinkable, but those thoughts demand to be thought.”

The interview, introduced on the Today show by Craig Melvin and discussed by co-hosts including Carson Daly and Al Roker, was described by Kotb as “very emotional.” The full sit-down is set to air in two parts.

Despite the anguish, Guthrie made it clear she is determined to remain visible and continue speaking publicly. She emphasized that she will not “hide” from the situation, even as the uncertainty continues.

A direct plea for answers

At the center of Guthrie’s message was a direct appeal to anyone who may have information about her mother’s disappearance. “Someone needs to do the right thing… she needs to come home now,” she said, urging anyone with knowledge of the case to come forward.

According to the Today broadcast, the family has offered a $1 million reward for Nancy Guthrie’s return, while federal authorities have also encouraged the public to share any tips with investigators.

The case has drawn national attention, particularly after authorities released images of a masked individual seen outside Nancy’s home on the night she disappeared. While several individuals were detained during the investigation, none were ultimately linked to the case.

As the search continues, Guthrie’s colleagues reflected on her resilience in the face of prolonged uncertainty. Kotb noted both the “desperation” and strength she observed during their conversation, while Melvin reiterated the importance of public cooperation.

Even amid what was described as a “tortured limbo,” Guthrie’s message remained focused and urgent: her family is still waiting, and they are still hoping for answers.
