Actor Gary Sinise is sharing the painful personal story behind his decision to step back from the entertainment industry, revealing how a devastating family health crisis reshaped his life and priorities.
In a May 14 interview with People, the Forrest Gump star spoke candidly about the years he spent focused almost entirely on his family after multiple cancer diagnoses struck his household.

Sinise said he stepped away from acting in 2019 so he could devote his full attention to helping his son Mac during a life-threatening battle with bone cancer.
A family crisis that changed everything
According to People, the actor’s decision to leave Hollywood came during an incredibly difficult period for the Sinise family.
His son Mac was diagnosed with bone cancer shortly after his wife, Moira Sinise, learned she had stage 3 breast cancer. The actor described the moment as feeling like “a one-two punch.”
While Moira eventually recovered following chemotherapy treatment, Mac’s illness continued to worsen.

Sinise said that during that time, his focus shifted entirely toward helping his son.
“That’s when I stopped acting,” he told People. “I started putting everything I had into trying to find a miracle for Mac.”
The actor explained that the search for a way to ease his son’s suffering consumed his thoughts during those years.
“I thought about cancer all the time,” he said. “You’re trying to take the pain away. A few times, I felt like I couldn’t do enough, or I didn’t know what to do.”
Faith, family, and honoring Mac’s legacy
The crisis pushed the longtime Catholic actor to rely heavily on his faith for strength and perseverance.
“Hope keeps you in the fight,” Sinise told the outlet. Even as his son’s condition worsened, he said he never allowed himself to believe the outcome would be fatal.
Tragically, Mac died in 2024 at the age of 33.
Mac Sinise, whose full name was McCanna Anthony Sinise, battled chordoma for several years before his death. During his fight with the disease, Mac underwent multiple spinal surgeries as doctors attempted to control the cancer.
Despite the physical toll of repeated procedures and treatments, he remained closely connected to his father’s charitable work through the Gary Sinise Foundation.
Even while recovering at home from surgeries, Mac continued contributing to the foundation’s efforts whenever his health allowed.
Mac ultimately died on January 5, 2024, at the age of 33 following his long battle with chordoma. He was later laid to rest on January 23.
His daughter Ella Sinise reflected on how deeply her father committed himself to supporting the family during the ordeal.
“Dad dove into the storm,” she told People, adding that watching him carry that burden was emotionally difficult but revealed his determination and character.
After Mac’s death, Sinise said the family leaned on one another as they worked through the grief together.
A mission to share his son’s music
Mac was also a musician and composer, and Sinise has made it a priority to ensure his son’s creative work reaches audiences.
After discovering music stored on Mac’s laptop, the actor combined those recordings with existing compositions to release two posthumous albums.
“I want people to hear his music. I want people to share it,” Sinise said in the interview. “I’m on a mission.”
The actor also revealed that he hopes one day Mac’s work will be performed by a live orchestra.
While Sinise has not ruled out returning to acting, he said family now takes priority above everything else.
“Something may come along and it’ll be right,” he told People. “But it’s harder to leave home now.”
Since losing his son, the actor said the experience has deepened his appreciation for the people closest to him.
“You think about the things that are really important,” Sinise said, explaining that he now holds his daughters “a lot tighter.”
