Dylan Dreyer opens up about painful split from husband Brian Fichera and how faith helped her move forward

Dylan Dreyer is speaking openly about a deeply personal chapter in her life following the end of her marriage.

The Today show host and guest weather anchor recently shared candid reflections about her separation from husband Brian Fichera during a conversation on NBC’s daytime program, offering viewers a glimpse into how the former couple has navigated the change while prioritizing their children.

The television personality, 44, announced in July that she and Fichera had ended their marriage after more than a decade together.

Dreyer first revealed the separation in a July 18 Instagram message, explaining that the couple had quietly parted ways months earlier. The two had been married since 2012.

During her appearance on NBC’s Today, Dreyer acknowledged that the end of a marriage is rarely simple.

“Everybody has their reasons for what leads to a separation or divorce,” Dreyer said while speaking with co-host Jenna Bush Hager. She noted that the full story behind the decision is something she has not publicly detailed.

Despite the heartbreak that often accompanies such transitions, Dreyer indicated that both she and Fichera have reached a point of acceptance.

She explained that when a relationship reaches a point where it cannot be repaired, the healthiest path forward can be acknowledging that reality and choosing a new direction.

Choosing friendship after marriage

Rather than allowing resentment to linger, Dreyer said the two have shifted their relationship into something different.

“We are no longer husband and wife,” Dreyer said during the interview, adding that once the decision to separate had been made, she no longer held onto frustrations tied to their marriage.

According to Dreyer, that perspective has helped both of them maintain a supportive connection.

She said she now feels she can be “a better friend than a wife,” describing the dynamic as one built on understanding rather than conflict.

Keeping their children at the center

While their marriage has ended, Dreyer emphasized that their family remains intact in another form.

She and Fichera share three sons — Calvin, 8, Oliver, 5, and Russell, 4 — and she said the children’s well-being has guided every decision they have made since separating.

“First and foremost, the kids have to feel love, and they have to be happy,” Dreyer said.

The television host explained that Fichera continues to be an active presence in their daily lives, including taking part in school drop-offs and family dinners.

According to Dreyer, the goal is ensuring their sons continue to experience a stable environment filled with support from both parents.

She also described a conversation she had with her eldest son about what defines a family.

Calvin responded simply: “Well, it’s a group of people that love each other.”

Dreyer said that perspective helped guide how she explained the separation to her children.

Faith and moving through heartbreak

In addition to family support, Dreyer said her Catholic faith has played an important role in helping her navigate the emotional weight of the separation.

“I’ve relied on my faith more than anything,” Dreyer said, explaining that spirituality has provided comfort during a difficult transition.

She added that believing in a higher power has helped her feel supported during uncertain moments.

For Dreyer, the shift in her personal life has not erased the bonds that remain between her, Fichera, and their children. Instead, she described the process as redefining what their family looks like moving forward.

“They are surrounded by love every single day,” Dreyer said of her sons — a message she hopes continues to guide their family through this new chapter.
