After devastating loss, Lara Spencer steps back into GMA amid ‘fog of grief’

Lara Spencer has returned to work at Good Morning America following the death of her mother, a loss she publicly shared with viewers and followers last month.

The television host described emerging from a “fog of grief” as she reunited with her GMA colleagues, expressing deep appreciation for their support during an intensely personal time.

Spencer previously revealed that her mother had faced a difficult battle with cancer. On February 16, she confirmed her passing in a heartfelt social media post that included family photos and a tribute to her life.

In that message, Spencer reflected on her mother’s character, describing her courage, optimism, faith, and unwavering love for family. She also shared one of her mother’s favorite sayings: “Don’t be sad it’s over honey—be grateful it happened.” Despite repeating those words, Spencer acknowledged the overwhelming sadness of losing her.

Her mother, a grandmother to 12 and great-grandmother to four, passed away on Friday the 13th, surrounded by her children and her rescue dog, as Spencer noted in her tribute.

Gratitude for her GMA family

As she stepped back into her professional role, Spencer turned again to social media to thank the Good Morning America team for helping her navigate what she called the emotional haze of mourning.

She posted a collection of photos featuring moments with staff members, including images of the group enjoying warm drinks outdoors in Florida’s 42-degree temperatures. In one lighthearted touch, the team gathered around a heat lamp and posed with a stuffed monkey, which Spencer referenced in her caption.

Finally coming out of the fog of grief and so grateful to my GMA family—making me feel warm and loved—even in 42 degrees temps in Florida,” she wrote.

She added that there was “no one I would rather be stranded with than this guy,” describing how they worked together to keep the show lively while huddled for warmth. She concluded her message with a simple expression of appreciation: “Thank you GMA family. I love you.”

An outpouring of support

Spencer’s return prompted an immediate response from fans and friends.

Comments included messages of sympathy and admiration, with one person writing, “We love you so much!” Another added, “So sorry to hear this.” A third shared that they had heard wonderful things about her mother and offered prayers.

The public response underscored the personal connection many viewers feel with the longtime morning show host, as she balances professional commitments with private grief.

Spencer’s words and images reflected both sorrow and gratitude—an acknowledgment of profound loss, and of the community supporting her as she moves forward.
